When were Pornographic magazines fazed out from Barbers. Any still offer the pre haircut reading material.I remember picking one up in Alan’s at Fiveways when I was about 10 and he told me to put it down
Please share any experiences you have had.
I guess the appointment system No in operation at many barbers now means there isn’t as much demand as there used to be
Have a great Christmas everyone
X Peace and Joy to all

Litwature?

I'm old, don't ever recall seeing porn in the barber's. Condoms for sale weirdly, something for the weekend sir?

I’m sure this is the only photo I’ve seen of this place, i walked past many times and remember stopping to look at the photos and notice board in the windows one night on the way back from a nearby pub.
Never went in as there were similar barbers in the area that I would get taken to as a kid.

I’m old too but most of the Brighton barbers I was taken to in the late 60s-70s had them and the old French letters as you mentioned

There's a wonderful photo of the window display in one of those Secret Brighton type books, in the Notable Eccentrics chapter. I'll try and dig it out.

I actually had a haircut done once by Mr Cooper, shortly before his shop closed. Late Eighties maybe? Anyways, it was a Saturday. Every other hairdresser within a mile of Baker Street had a long wait for a cut. Only wanted a no 3 crop. So bit the bullet and went to Coopers for haircut. Huge mistake! Mr Cooper, in dressing gown and slippers seemed surprised to see a customer. He must have been 90 if he was a day. Placed all around his shop were bowls of cat food. Cats everywhere. WTF! Anyways, I assumed on one level that I could trust The Man Who Cut Gen. Montgomery's Hair. And to be fair, he didn't slice my head off with his cutthroat razor. Not exactly a comfortable experience tho. Nor in any way a haircut you could wear in public. Tho taking the positives, he only charged me £1.50. I only had a fiver on me. I didn't hang around for the change...

Great story :lolol: There is a funny one about him painting everything pink.

This is the only other photo I’ve found but very similar, mentioning the shop closed in 1985.

If it is Jazz Mags you want go & work offshore. Every cabin was stuffed with them when I first went (1991).
Having knocked offshore work on the head about 10 years ago I cannot comment to whether this is still the case. :lolol:

I had a similar experience in there except the haircut was rank. It closed in 95, according to the link in post #17. Julian who now owns the barbers there ('Jools') has some photos of the inside of the shop before he refurbished it. The haircuts and bants are infinitely better these days.
I also used to frequent an old school barbers in George St Kemptown that was random in its barbering skills but a dependable source of condoms.
