As for criticism of Trott, it's ridiculous. At a push you can argue he scored too slowly in this particular match, but then again it's a tough pitch to score fast on for anyone. The bottom line is you need to post a total and you can't do that if other batsmen are posting run-a-ball 15s/20s, otherwise we'll be all out for 200 off 200 balls in the 34th over.
We have moved well beyond the Boycott mentality of players doing things for their own personal glory, and there seem to be concerns that Trott is slightly too concerned with keeping his own wicket intact, at the expense of scoring a bit quicker.
Trotts WC
Netherlands 62 from 65, better than KP and Bell
India 16 - 19 balls
Ireland 92 from 92 better strike rate than Stauss and Bell, top scored
South Africa 52 from 94 rebuilding after Strauss, KP and Bell failed.
Today 67 from 99 Top scored
I say arguably, he's top scored.
I'm not saying he's terrible by any stretch of the imagination, all I'm saying is that he could be better. I don't know why that's meeting with quite so much opposition?
I think if you criticised Collingwood, or Yardy, or Anderson's form then you'd have a point. Criticising our most prolific batsmen seems ludicrous. At the end of the day he is what he is. If you told him to up his scoring rate then his productivity would, in all likelihood, go down.
England's problem is their lack of quality 50-over bowling options.
