and the balance between decent people and scum is getting more and more even as the years go by

I noticed this, at the end of the story;
"Karl Ness, 26, and Qhuram Awan, 23, were found guilty of helping Moat. Ness was given a 40-year minimum term, and Awan must serve at least 20 years"

Amazing, and really excessive in my opinion. NOT that I sympathise with any of Moat's mates or accessories to his acts - but to put an accomplice away for that amount of time at taxpayer expense? Sorry - murderers get less.
It must be because the police were victimized by Moat, that anyone gets minimum 40 years.

Yes as were all the civilians who were killed or injured by his rampage.

Interesting - how many civilians were killed or injured exactly bhaexpress?

I counted the original girlfriend injured, and her new boyfriend killed. So that is one civilian murdered, and one injured.

Oh sorry, I didn't realise there was a minimum number of victims, pardon me for being self righteous.

Looking at the girls I am surprised she can write!! :D

As for the sentencing it does seem a bit extreme when put in to context with other crimes!!

The police don't dish out the sentences though, that's the judge's responsibility.

I guess the reason for the length of those two guys' sentences is because they pleaded not guilty for starters, which means you always get a heavier sentence if convicted, and because they were complicit in what he was doing, ie he couldn't have carried out the attacks without their assistance. They helped him plan it and they even repeatedly lied to police about that, claiming early in the investigation that Moat had kidnapped them. They were aware he was going out with the intention of murdering people and had numerous opportunities to stop him or tell someone, but neither of them did. One innocent guy is dead and another had his life irrevocably changed because of that. They might as well have pulled the trigger themselves.

I should add that while it was slightly surprising to see them get 40 years (even with a long criminal history) , it's not so much that they shouldn't be locked up for that long, but that murderers should frequently get longer.
