Arsenal's calamitous reserve keeper David Ospina, Man City benchwarmer Wilfried Bony, Chelsea reserve player that is yet to make an appearance on loan at Bournemouth Christian Atsu and QPR's Massimo Luongo, who was at Swindon last season, all on the shortlist..

I get that they want to include players from every region or whatever, but come on..

Luongo was the player of the tournament at the Asian Cup

It would be nice for them to look outside the normal two and give it to someone like Hazard.

How is Rooney on there?

Yeah shocking isn't it. I mean, all he has done is recently become England's record international goal scorer, and at some point this season he is possibly going to become Manchester Utd's all time record goal scorer as well.

So the fact he has passed one significant milestone and might pass another, despite the fact he has been largely crap in his performances, means he deserves to be considered for the 'best player in the world' award for the past year?

45 names of players most of which have been (at best) mediocre is not a very short list at all really, is it.

Because he's been so phenomenal this last year, right?
