So new research has revealed that if you eat just 2 rashers of bacon or 1 sausage a day you massively increase your risk of getting pancreatic cancer which a nasty bastard by all accounts. Therefore, it's goodnight to anyone who has a full English every morning. But is it?

Surely with the tomato, the mushrooms, maybe the baked beans and Tommy k, with say 3 florets of broccoli added just in case, plus a glass of heathy red wine on the side, all the nasty effects of the processed meaty morcels are counteracted by the 5 a day superhero foods. Job done, just don't light up afterwards.

Carry on

So, 5 glasses a day gets you your fibre total, hmm - ok.

Being serious for a moment. Red wine breaks down the fatty acids in your diet which helps keep the arteries clear. Proof of the benefits are the French who are as a nation very healthy compared to the rest of Euroland. Everything in moderation is the key to a healthy diet. Don't believe the 'experts' without checking the details as they have most likely been paid write a report with a predetermined outcome. Sad but true.

I always heed the American saying "Consider the source", of course people have vested interests, but all the "wine is good for you" I believe has recently been debunked. Doesn't matter to me either way, I don't really drink anything any more - having done about 5 years of at least a bottle of red every night. Far too simplistic to claim that French drinking wine is responsible for a healthier life (even if that's true), they tend to eat better, fresher food anyway - just look at their markets.

There is only one problem though - that research, like all food research, is total bollocks. There is no such thing as 'bad' food, eat what you like and don't worry about it. And if we assume for one minute that there is a tiny, tiny sliver of truth in the oft-repeated 'facts' that fat, sugar, salt, processed foods, takeaways, red meat, alcohol, etc are 'bad' for you (and even I accept that a diet that consists solely of lard sandwiches washed down by a bottle of scotch is probably not 100% ideal) - so what? Changing your diet won't add another 50 years to your life, but I'll accept it might feel like it.

Off to re-heat the remains of last night's Pappa Johns All The Meats pizza for my breakfast now. I'm sure even the most brainwashed foodie will accept that a pizza (like a burger) is the cornerstone of any nutritious breakfast.

Was this "evidence" reported in the Daily Mail by any chance?

Nope, BBC news website today. Some scandanavian medical research. I would forward the link but I'm too busy finishing off my friday bacon butty

Don't know how you define "healthy" but if you take life expectancy as a guide then it's true for women - French and Italian women live the longest in Europe but it's not true for men: Frenchmen have the same life expectancy as us.
Life Expectancy Of 14 Nations In Europe

But you do have to consider that France also has one of the highest ratios of doctors per head of population in Europe, spends more than the European average on healthcare and, as you mention, buys better and fresher food.

That may be changing though. France has just introduced a tax on sugary drinks to combat rising childhood obesity and there's growing concern about the onset of fast food outlets over there.

Surprised to see the stuff about sausages and processed meat being unhealthy being news, that's been known for years. We've always been sparing about giving that to our kids
