i'm trying to fit a baby car seat for my sister in law , i have followed the instructions and whilst the seat is secure it does have sideways movement.

the question is is this normal or should i take car and seat to halfords or someone similar to check.

many thanks for any replies as the baby is due tomorrow .

I believe there is normally some sideways movement, but not much. If you were to hit the back of the seat fairly hard (as in an impact) it shouldn't move.

I take it its one of the seats that has a latch either side of the mid section which the belt goes through and one latch at the back, which the longer shoulder harness goes through? I'm no expert on these, but that is how mine use to work.

I "assume" it is fine, but to be honest, if you are not sure I would get an expert to look at it. These things you shouldn't leave to chance.

car seats are possibly the most impossible thing to fit until you get it right at which point you say - ahhh thats how you do it. I'm still waiting for that moment for one of our cars!!

Think it depends what seat you've got. We have a Maxi Cosi, Cabrio Fix - http://www.maxi-cosi.com/maxicosi/productdetail.aspx?id=6&language=ch-en - it simply sits on the back seat, with the baby facing the seat back, and the safety belt keep it pretty firmly in place.

Make sure you / she doesn't do long journeys without a regular break (every 1.5 hours), though, especially with newborns. Babies' spines are very soft, so being sat in a car seat for any length of time can be damaging to the spine.

Good luck with it all

Take it back, get it checked and test that one and another at the store for comparison! I'm surprised they didn't try it in the car when you first bought it. Cars seats is soemthign you really don't wnat to mess with.

Hope all goes well for your sis-in-law.

my wife is a cpst, but we are over in hampshire.

she would advise you to stay far away from halfords and find your road safety officer at the local council and ask them who is the local cpst for your area or when the next fitting check is.

what car seat is it?

I forgot that, being out of England for some time. Starry is absolutely right.
