A few thoughts:

* Currently at 27,889 - will be 28,000 if the club can squeeze in 30,433 for Bristol City.
* Regardless, I presume that is going to eclipse our highest average gates ever, although I recall they were huge under Poyet too.
* Impressive that we're fourth in a league containing Newcastle and Aston Villa and that Leeds and Sheff Wed are below us despite having much bigger grounds to bolster their average gates for big matches. Leeds got 36,000 for Newcastle's visit, for example.
* Championship gates are incredible. Anyone who grew up watching football in the 80s would know that the Championship attendance table is basically what the old Division 1 used to look like. In fact, the all conquering Liverpool sides used to average 38,000 in those days - just 6,000 than mediocre Aston Villa manage now. Man Utd were always the best supported side in those days, but their gates were 8,000 fewer than Newcastle now get in the league below. Surely this is partly down to the competitive nature of the division. Eventually, it could get a bit dull in the top division by comparison.

That's an interesting table.

If you look at the away attendance averages, they are much closer.. And we would be relegated!

(Burton did well - people wanted to see a new team?)

Expect Dirty Leeds [emoji769] to eclipse us as they've sold >36k for their last home game.

Would like to imagine that given our successful season the away attendance is in some way a show of respect as fans felt their team had little to no chance of a result. (In reality we're not and never will be a big draw)

Sheffield Wednesday will get a similar 35,000 gate for their last home game too, but assuming we draw our usual 29-30,000, neither will catch us. Leeds would need over 41,000 to eclipse us, Sheffield Wednesday a lot more than that.

Last time we were promoted to the top league we averaged 22,074 and the season we were relegated from the top league 14,676,those were the days that the attendance pretty much matched the crowds:moo:

First season in the old first division averaged 24,795.

Anybody here know the poster paul & shark ?

He doesn't seem to be answering his private messages.

Can't think why :lolol:

But Simster was right: a bet that size was always likely to see the loser disappearing (not that I'm suggesting you'd have done it, Hans, you seem to be a person of principle).

BTW, what a load of bed-wetters on that thread. Was it really only three years ago?

Brighton - In your face
It's Midweek matches that bring it down - so many empty seats - so there'll be less of them next year due to less midweek matches unless we have a lot of MNF matches. Add to that everything else we'll hit 30 next year.

Away should surely take into account travel distance. Teams in the Midlands don't realise how easy they have it. Bearly anywhere was more than two hours away when I lived in Nottingham.
