I lived in Australia for a year and became totally hooked. They had about 12-15 hours of live matches on free terrestrial TV every weekend when I was there in 1996/97 - it was brilliant.

There is so much to admire about not just the sport but the officiating and the discipline. The FA and Prem should take a masterclass from the AFL. There is TOTAL respect for the officials and none of the playters goes down injured unless they are half-dead.

I'd argue that in many ways it is the model way to run a sport.

I like the way the umpires allow players to "bump" each other to let off steam. I was watching a match over the weekend and the staring out / bumping carried on between the forward and his match-up marker for about 15 seconds.

It makes you wonder what would happen if it was permitted in the Premiership.

St Kilda fan, me.

The rules are indeed complicated. I can't quite work out if it's one point for severing an opposing player's limb or six. It's definitely three for rendering somebody unconscious, and there seems to be some kind of bonus point system in operation if you can get a member or members of the crowd involved in a punch up, which seems to have happened on several occasions.

It's tops - the only irritating thing about it is the Aussies' annoying habit of calling it the 'best game in the world' when theirs is, to my knowledge, the only professional league playing it on the planet. Oh and those bloody great pom-poms; they suck big-time.

West Coast versus Collingwood (semi final in the ealry 90's) only 4 players were not involved in a touch line scrap which also involved the trainers and a cameraman, play was waived on and Collingwood scored.

Exhibition matches are regularly scheduled for The Oval in London, which has in the past been an event for ex-patriate Australians. The event has been annual as the "AFL Challenge Trophy" since 2002 and although it has not always been annual event, a small amount of interest in the games has grown amongst locals.

Since sell-out game in Los Angeles, USA in early 2006, club officials of the Sydney Swans have called for regular games (similar to the London matches) including the possibility of a premiership match.

The WAFL announced intentions to play an exhibition match in Mumbai, India in late 2006 between the grand finalists.[1] However this match did not go ahead.

In November 2005, AFL club Melbourne made an announcement that it was investigating playing an exhibition match in 2006 or 2007 in the Chinese metropolis Tianjin, with Beijing or Shanghai possible alternative hosts. [3] The match was delayed by the Melbourne Football Club's CEO.

In February 2006, AFL club Essendon's CEO indicated the possibility of an exhibition match in Japan in 2007 to mark 20 years since the last Aussie Bowl between the Bombers and Hawthorn. [4]

To the uninitiated eye (mine) it seems like a haphazard mishmash of punching the ball, kicking it, running with it, all done headless chicken-style by too many men dressed in worryingly tight shorts offset with 1980s era tank tops that are again too tight. And the ref throwing the ball back into 'play' over his head! What is that about?

I can see that the NFL came from rugby, but the AFL?!? Were the Aussies so desperate to carve out their own identity through a 'unique' national sport that they combined bits of football, rugby, athletics, boxing and whatever else is in there to bring us 'Aussie Rules,' which to me seems over-complicated and slightly silly for the sake of it.

Awaits the onslaught

I went to the derby match between West Coast Eagles and the Fremantle Dockers earlier this season whilst in Perth for a holiday/wedding. Didn't really know what to expect, but thoroughly enjoyed it and found the rules surprisingly easy to pick up. Was lucky enough to watch from an outside corporate hospitality box. I was a little disappointed by the atmosphere considering the Eagles / Dockers match is supposedly a bit of a grudge match. West Coast had a player called Dean Cox, who was about three times the size of our one!
