Robert Fico in life threatening critical condition. Not a nice man by all accounts but this feels like a spooky and frightening parallel to the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand that set of a chain of events sparking WW1. We already have worrying parallels with Germany's aggression in the late 1930s and Russia's now. A very real concern that events are overtaking the efforts of those that are trying to work towards peace

Who is working toward peace? The UK certainly isn't, far too distracted currently with the chaos engulfing the government and their desperate attempts to bully refugees and make it legal, whilst losing every election they're forced to confront. They're squatting in government for as long as they remain and we all know it. The UK is the weakest we've been in Europe since World War 2.

The World stage is absolutely primed for another World War and in truth, it's already happening. The path to WW2 was 10 years long and we're well on that path now. All out war isn't too far away and there's a real vaccuum of leadership across the world. If Trump is elected US president (or isn't elected but is successful in gaining enough of the Electoral College delegates to be declared president) he will likely further enhance the weakening of alliances with the EU and individual nations and then all bets are off.

Enjoy every day you're alive, because you have no control over the future. Anything can happen at any moment, so make sure to enjoy every day you get.

I think I’ll start it off with three points tonight.

Yes. It’s ominous because of the history of its fight for independence from the Austrian-hungarian Empire - similar to that of Ukraine- and of course borders Ukraine so the risk of conflict widening is there. However, this hasn’t happened in a vacuum - Fico has been moving Slavakia closer and closer to a pro-Russian position since last September. The internal divisions in Slavakia threaten to disintegrate into civil war - on the one hand it is a country that had been moving towards pro-western ideals, is a member of the European Union, NATO and supports Ukraine but is now led by a populist Putin sympathiser who, like many other world leaders at the moment it seems, is intent on leading his Country into the Abyss.

Bit of a leap to say the least, so far we know little of the would be assassin and their motivation so to think that this event is somehow a parallel to the assassination that started a World War (that most European countries were keen for and looking for any old excuse to kick it off) and modern times, when most in Europe think that a war on the continent is one of the last things they want.

Hopefully the PM recovers quickly

Europe and indeed, the wider world, is a hotbed of flashpoints at the monent. I think we have reached the end of the road for the UN now as they have been shown to have no authority or power to stop any reasonable sized nation from going to war..

Russia has got away with War Crimes in Syria and has been emboldened to do the same in Ukraine..China is eyeing up Taiwan and numerous small archipelago's on order to extend its " reach ". The US is seen as divided ( thanks to Trump and his appeasers ) and no longer the guarantor of financial or explosive oblivion for a nation that steps out of line... lots of little squabbles, independence protests and neighbors eying up disputed territories....scary times all around.

If he dies, well, he’s a friend of Russia and Putin apparently. Interesting times.

No more scary than the rest of history. History has always been war interrupted by a bit of peace. I’m relaxed. Too old to fight anyhow. If China and/or Russia wants to kill us all there is nothing you or I can do anyhow. We’re a tiny country and population, that can’t even be arsed or is too unfit to go to the shops for a takeaway so fighting a war is a bit of a stretch :)

Any country that is actively and financially supporting Ukraine against the illegal invasion of their country and the unthinkable but inevitable global consequences if Putin succeeds, is working towards peace IMHO. The UK have led the way in western europe. There are many, many reasons to have a go at this government but this isn't one. Thankfully Labour and the Tories appear to share the same view here so there is no reason to make this party political.
