It amazes me that some folk think that prison is a considered institution that works on the best plan for ensuring that, when released, each individual criminal has reformed and been trained in a strategy to mitigate against relapse.

Prisons are where we dump the convicted, where they rot, largely unsupervised, in a rat-eat-rat world in which forming alliances (let's call them 'gangs') is the only route to survive of you are not incredibly hard or incredibly bonkers/ruthless.

The older NSC users will remember the 70s and 80s where any whiff of comfort was seized upon by the Mail and Sun, exposing the lack of constant deprivation and brutality that these b'stards 'deserve'.

Anyone advocating prison reform, or indeed any sort of increase in spending of YOUR TAXES was vilified as a sanctimonious and clueless liberal.

That may be all well and good, but in the UK we still seem to release some prisoners after serving their sentence rather than leaving them in prison until they die. When these folk are released, some of them have been transformed by their experience into base beasts. Who knew?

Until we make up our mind whether to make prison work, or to just execute most folk who would deserve a custodial sentence (either would reduce reoffending, albeit one would cost a lot less money) then we will end up stuck with the daft situation we have now.
