I have osteoarthritis, whilst uncomfortable and occasionally painful is nowhere near as bad or as painful as rheumatoid arthritis. I saw Dr Vijay Hajela at Nuffield Haywards Heath. I’m fortunate to have private health care but I believe he is also an NHS consultant.

I've had flare ups of sero negative RA for 35 years. Luckily further apart each time. In 2017 I had a debilitating attack in spine and neck for 8 months. Was referred to my best rheumatologist ever at Princess Royal Hospital. Dr Brenda Stuart. She is close to retirement but maybe still has her private consultancy, these reviews echo my opinion of her.

I feel for your friend as it bloody hurts. Just got over 3 months of it in my right foot.within a few weeks I snapped a needle in my foot. Nowhere near as painful as a full on RA attack. Still waiting for an appointment for it to be cut out.

I had osteoarthritis [worn-joint] in my left subtalar joint - subtalar is the joint between your ankle and heel bone.
This was caused by years of impact trauma, mainly through lots of football and being a right-arm fast bowler [cricket] for years.

Even walking for 15 minutes generated intense pain that would last for days - it got really bad in my 50's and I was seeing a NHS podiatry specialist [referred by GP]. Once a year for about eight years I would have an x-ray guided steroid injection into the subtalar which bought 6-8 weeks of glorious pain relief. However, they could not continue this therapy indefinitely so I was offered a joint fusion operation, which I had in Feb-22 [at 61] - best thing I ever did! Took a year to fully recover but now I can walk pain-free and I'm back to playing golf as I need all the exercise I can get to get my weight back down which had ballooned with enforced sedentary behaviour.

The pain was a bit like tooth ache, always there, nagging, 5-6 out of 10 - but now I feel I have a new lease of life - walking football next ...

A sad update regarding my mate, it turned out that it wasn't arthritis at all. He unexpectedly passed away at the Royal Sussex on Sunday, from a bacterial infection and Septicemia. Just 58 and not overweight, no previous health issues. I can't believe it.

The only symptoms were a few months of painful joints and then a couple of weeks of eyesight issues.

I doubt anyone else here knew him. I kind of mention this as a warning about Septicemia, it's incredibly dangerous, my NHS worker spouse sees this all the time. Various consultants at Redhill, the RSCH and the Sussex Eye Hospital never considered this as a cause for his pain and later failing sight.

Jesus, that is horrendous. So sorry to hear that. Sepsis seems to still go undiagnosed. Two sets of friends lost kids to it, 2yrs old and 4yrs old. Tragic and totally avoidable.

Always use to be the old wives tale of clicking your knuckles that it would lead to arthritis, but it's just a release of the air in between your joints.

That said, I've been taking Cod liver oil for the last two years (47 now) and feel so much better for it. Is it a placebo effect, gawd knows, but joints feel much more supple now than they did two years ago, so I'll keep on taking them.

I have been on evening primrose oil and glucosamine and chondroitin for 20 years. I have had finger flare ups but my fingers are not all twisted like my mum's were at 10 years junior to my age now. Proves nothing, but I'm going to carry on with it.

That's a real shock and very sad indeed. Terrible outcome.
