Arrested in Stuttgart

Anyone else on here get arrested on Saturday night in Stuttgart?

It was an absolute disgrace. We had watched the Germany game with a load of German fans and were singing and taking photos with them - next thing glass rained down on us and the riot police came piling. Every England fan in the square was arrested and put on coaches to the Police Station. Was finally released at 7am after having my details and mug shot taken. We were then issued with ASBO types things banning us from Stuttgart until 10th July!

Thankfully, i managed to pick up a ticket off a tout and got to see the match!

Well i was No 251 for my mug shot and my mate was No 661 so any where from there

not me personally but a few of the lads with us were.

they were carted off and they had to give up their tickets when getting their picture and details taken. the police look at the tickets and saw they have guest of XXXXXXX printed on them and official passes for the ground and then rolled over backwards to help my mates, escorted them back to their hotel and couldn't do enough to ensure they got to the game and had a good ole time.

which is a bit bizarre to me, if they are pulled for misbehaving it's just that. who they are in stuttgart as guests of shouldn't come into it.

i thought stuttgart was a horrid place though, definitely the worst of the cities hosting games.

Without doubt Stuttgart was the worst city i visited. I would say that Cologne was the best i visited. Even when there was trouble there, the police moved the crowds on rather than just round every England fan up.

One of the England fans arrested when trouble flared in Stuttgart is meeting his MP to raise concerns about the German police.

Jason Smith was one of nearly 400 England fans arrested.

The 36-year-old, from Sneinton, said he was with England fans sitting in Stuttgart's main square, where they had watched Germany beat Sweden on a big screen, when

problems started.

"One of the German fans threw a bottle at some of the England fans who were cheering on Sweden and a plastic pint glass was thrown by one of the England fans," said Mr Smith, a holiday rep.

"I saw no more than three glasses being thrown. The next thing I knew about 50 police surrounded everybody sitting in the bar area.

"It was ridiculous because we were all just sat there and had nothing to do with the trouble which was hardly noticeable.

"The police removed fans from the bar area and they tied our hands behind our backs with plastic wire and took us to a car park surrounded by walls and barbed wire where we were forced to spend the night.

"In the car park everyone was very angry but we tried to keep our spirits high and everyone was singing the theme from the movie The Great Escape. After a while we all went to sleep although one of the fans tried to climb over the fence and got tangled in the barbed wire."

Before Mr Smith was released his picture was taken with a convict number around his neck. He was not charged, although he was banned from entering the centre of Stuttgart to watch England's second round match against Ecuador, on Sunday.

He said: "I was made to feel very unwelcome and feel humiliated that they arrested me, even though I had done nothing wrong."

Christiane Honer, of Stuttgart police, said: "We had a large group of English fans who were causing trouble. They were warned several times to calm down.

"We could not be sure who was causing trouble so everyone in that area was arrested. They had plenty of warnings to move on but they decided to stay.

"They were not charged because the law is different in Germany, although they were banned from entering the city centre.

"I cannot comment further on individual cases."

Mr Smith is meeting Nottingham East MP John Heppell this weekend to discuss his arrest.

He said: "I want to explain the situation to him and hopefully his intervention will help get all of us who were wrongfully arrested get an apology from the German authorities."

I was drinking in the bar just behind the steps but luckily I left to get some food at the station as soon as the German game ended, so I missed all the fun and games. How much did you pay for a ticket in the end? I paid 500 euros for a cat 1 at about 1 o' clock, only to find some bloke selling some for face value at the ground, but that's the risk you take I suppose.

Actually i take that back - i heard Stuggart was an expensive dump. I still didn't like Kaiserslauten though!! Munich is the place to go. Semi-finals here we come!!

going back to Stuttgart is not on my list of things to do. it was dirty, expensive and the people were vile. the total opposite to what we've experienced elsewhere. Not going to bother for the 3rd v 4th play off, even if England are there. I'm with a bunch of England fans but even they don't want to bother for it. i had heard good things about stuttgart but don't have one good thing to say for last weekend.

are you going back out? we're off to Berlin tomorrow for the Argentina game on Friday, then overnight to Gelsenkirchen for Saturday then down to Munich until Thursday, then back to Berlin for the final.

I've enjoyed it but i won't be sorry to get back to normal and be home. Nor will my bank manager.

To be fair - I also thought Stuttgart was underwhelming and a bit bland when I went there, I think it's maybe not the best time to judge these places when there are 100,000 pissed people shouting everywhere until 5am. Although, of course, Cologne gets a lot of practice for that sort of thing with its completely mentalist annual carnival and the atmos was magnificent there.

One Stuttgart thing I'd definitely recommend (this is the only time I've been there) is the Cannstatter Volksfest - it's basically like the Munich Oktoberfest, which it follows but it's pretty undiscovered tourists. Until you've been plastered in a massive tent with 6,000 other drunks all swaying from side to side while a buxom wench carries 12 litres of beer in one go, you haven't LIVED.

We got 4 Cat 1 tickets sitting next to each other for 400 Euros each - that was about 2 hours before kick off. The face value of the tickets were 120 Euros so i didnt do too really.

I had a good chat to the tout and he was saying how everyone thinks they are making a fortune out there cos they think they pick the tickets up for face value. The truth is he said is that they pay top money to bent FIFA officals to guarantee tickets
