Argus break Labour party plans

The Argus 'exclusivly revealed' the plans for the Labour Party Conference.

On Monday the 27th, there will be a march of thousands of Albion fans, meeting at Maderia Drive and marching towards the conference at 5.30 singing 'on site in Brighton'.

Its on the front page.

Should that be one site?

Wonder if the NIMBY's will be having an alternative protest? Presumably they won't be given permission.

God lets hope this doesn't turn into a football vs crusties thing, tempting though it would be to pull a few purple dreadlocks.

"ONE site in Brighton" has to be the message.

Erm, who's organising this protest march?

Does anyone think that this is a very bad idea:

1) We won't get anywhere near the Brighton Centre.
2)The party causes traffic chaos, and we're gonna add to it (Not that I mind but you can picture the letters in the Argus already)
3) It could turn into a bit of a ruck with the boys in blue (and do nothing for our holligan image) I'm not suggesting that any of us would casue trouble but you know how people jump on the old band wagon....

Problem with starting at 5 is that it will cause maximum chaos, plus many will still be at work.

I'm worried that the "thousands" that the Argus speak of will be the usual 50 or so.

I'll do my best to get there, but it will mean leaving work at about 3pm.

Why - how many of the Falmer residents have dreadlocks?

We must all make a big effort to be there, even if it means some people taking time off work. This is so much more important than all the promotion parades.

Also encourage supporters of other clubs to turn up.

Fully agree with you-this could be our final opportunity to get our message across.

I'll be there, so will Mrs Bwian-we'll be heading down there from Guildford with my 2 Falmer banners-going to need some help to carry them from some of you please.

We need loads of kids there too!!

Getting supporters from other clubs is a brilliant idea-the Wrexham boys might be up for it!

Yes we will - right outside it.

From 5pm: Assemble in Madeira Drive

5.30pm: Depart Madeira Drive, along Kings Road to the Brighton Conference Centre

6pm: Arrive at Conference Centre for short speeches

6.10pm: Leave on return march to Madeira Drive (press release says: "We would like supporters to please complete both legs of the march – it is a 2 way thing (a game of two halves!)."

Press release says: "Our thanks go to Sussex Police for their help and co-operation in planning the march which, as with all our campaign initiatives, will be conducted in a peaceful, witty and humorous manner."

This has been carefully planned by the FFA Team (particularly Paul Samrah) for weeks/months, not thrown together at the last minute.

Sounds good, but I bet you they won't let us through the security barrier itself. Presume any speeches will be on the seafront opposite the Brighton Centre, because that's the closest anyone without a pass will be allowed. Today's Times has an article implying that security will be the tightest ever.

The police will need to keep any NIMBY well away from us...the abuse they'd get would do our cause no good at all.

All of the detailed arrangements have been discussed and agreed with both the Police and the Conference Organisers.

Congratulations to Paul Samrah, who has been working on this for months.

The march was mentioned in the Press Association's story that was sent out to all the national media yesterday:-

Tight Security for Labour Conference

By Matt Adams, PA News

Huge concrete and steel barriers designed to prevent car and truck bomb attacks are to be used at Labour’s party conference, police said today.

The tightest security measures ever seen at the event in Brighton will protect delegates as part of a £2.3 million operation to guard against international terrorism.

More than 1,000 police officers will take part in Operation Otter, the largest of its kind undertaken by Sussex Police.

As in 2001, when Labour last visited the city two weeks after the September 11 terror attacks in America, the Brighton Centre and two hotels will become a secure island site, caged in steel fencing and concrete walls.

Armed police will patrol the city while every one of the 16,000 people expected at the five-day event, starting on September 26, will be searched each time they enter the conference.

Today Chief Superintendent Jeremy Paine of Sussex Police said no specific terrorist threats against the conference had been received.

But he said the possibility of an attack remained in “everyone’s minds.”

He urged local traders and members of the public to contact the police if they see anything unusual in the build up to or during the conference.

“There is no information that anyone is interested in targeting the conference,” he said. “However, if something does become known, we will be ready for it. We have in place a no compromise approach to security.

“Brighton will be a very safe place to be during the conference.”

The new pontoon shaped barriers, made of steel encased in concrete, will be placed at any point around the island site where a car or truck attack could be possible.

The mobile 10ft long and three-foot high barriers, used with concrete wall sections, have been built for similar events up and down the country and were last seen at Labour’s Manchester conference earlier in the year.

Chief Supt Paine said: “The barriers will make sure no vehicle can be driven into island site, either accidentally or on purpose.”

The Metropole Hotel will once again by connected to the Grand Hotel and the Brighton Centre by a purpose built bridge, which will cross Cannon Place.

An adjacent multi-storey car park will be shut to the public, while cars using nearby carparks will be searched.

The police will have stop and search powers in the weeks before and during the conference and will be able to close all roads in the city at a moment’s notice if a security threat emerges.

Chief Supt Paine said he would have at his disposal “all the necessary power” to cope with an attack from the air or from the sea, but would not be drawn on specific measures, such as whether any RAF fighters would be on stand-by.

An air exclusion zone will be enforced, with the Sussex Police helicopter circling above, but no sea exclusion zone is being used, he added.

Home Office cash is being used to fund the security operation.

Only two organisations have so far contacted the police to say they will be marching on the conference.

Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club supporters are expected to call for a stadium to be built at Falmer, near Brighton, while the Trade Justice Movement will be campaigning for worldwide fair trade.

Adam Bates, head of tourism at Brighton and Hove City Council, said the event injects between £10 million and £15 million into the local economy.

He said the council had so far not received a single letter of complaint about the event, adding: “Sometimes it is difficult for people to understand why this conference is important to us, but we want to emphasise that we welcome the event into our city.”

Will this end up like that scene in the Life of Brian where the People's Popular Front clash with the Popular front and have a punch up.
I can picture it now, The Brighton Popular Front For the Construction of Falmer clash with Ernest's Arse's by the Pier in scenes not witnessed since the Mods and Rocker clashes of the 60s

There it is again...at Falmer, NEAR Brighton.

For F**K's sakes!!!!!!!

The Stadium is to be built IN Brighton.

Definitely time to ditch the Falmer nametag and start referring to it as The East Brighton Stadium or similar. Calling it Falmer plays into the hands of the NIMBYs.

Thats a good point Bwian but abit late now, if in the early days we said "East brighton" then everyone would know where it is (well they would'nt they would just recognise the Brighton bit), but as ive found taking to non-BHA fans when you say Falmer the first thing they say is "wheres that?"

perhaps we should be calling it 'Village Way North, Brighton'

Got to agree that the biggest mistake of the whole stadium plan was associating the site with Falmer. The site is in the East of Brighton not Falmer. Falmer ends at the boundary with Lewes district council. We are not building the stadium in Falmer but in Brighton.
