The blood service is desperately short of the red stuff. Apparently only 6% of those who can donate choose to do so.

I live in Australia and I'm not allowed to give blood because I may contaminate the local population with mad cows disease.

Apparently people who lived in Britain during a certain period of time are not allowed to donate blood in Australia.

I used to be, when they used to visit my work. And that was in Croydon so mine would probably have got to one of them. Ugh.

I don't know where the blood donor is now - and frankly its not been my top priority to find out.

I'd do it again.

Everyone expects a blood supply to be there when they of freinds/family need it yet only a tiny 6% of the population bother to donate. It's easy and painless and to be honest I quite look forward to going along. It's all very freindly and I always end up with the nice warm glow from knowing I may have just helped save someones life. Oh, and did I mention that they have Nurses?! :D

I used to do and have donated over 27 pints but I'm not allowed to now.
I caught chicken pox from my children when I was in my 30's. I was told that if I gave blood in the next 6 months the antibodies were invaluable for children fighting leukaemia. I turned up at the church hall two months later to donate. The nurse looked at my doctor's letter and called over the senior doctor. I was treated like a VIP because they could treat 50 children from the one pint of plasma they could draw from it.

Not allowed to - actually, I think I would be allowed to in the UK, but I had relatively serious jaundice after I was born, so excluded for donating in Ireland.

I have been matched to someone who needs a complete blood transfusion every six months to stay alive, so give plasma and platelets too. There are a dozen of us on call all the time in case this person has a serious injury. It's one hour, twice a year, and you save people's lives by doing so. Done over 200 donations now so arm resembles a pin cushion, but it gives me heroin chic with the kids.

My ex was O negative which is universal. When he was based in Hong Kong there was an appeal throughout the fleet for anyone with that blood type. He was one of two. He was also on call.
