Is that how it works? Weird - I've got seven mates who are firefighters, and all are white, able-bodied and straight. They must have all just been really lucky I guess?

Come on fellas, lighten up, its Friday and i am joking. Its what the Daily mail would have you believe (i dont read it of course), but im only fishing here

Thought about applying myself once, had a few friends in the industry who said sadly, most of the work they carried on was cutting car crash victims out of the wreckages :( Changed my mind after that. Not all glitz and glamour so bear that in mind.

It's true. They spend a TINY proportion of their time fighting fires, at least those that you'd call "proper" fires (as opposed to a bunch of teenagers setting light to a bin in a park. They deal more with car wrecks (here's a tip, people, if you don't want the roof cut off your precious vehicle and it being completely written off after a minor shunt, don't mention the words "neck pain" within twenty feet of a firefighter), people stuck in lifts, pulling cows out of drainage ditches, and educating kids in schools.

Great job, but I'm just saying don't go into it thinking you're going to be climbing up the Towering Inferno every couple of days, that's all...

A number of small stations seem to be recruiting I was in Deal 2 week ago and they had a banner up recruiting for that station.

Fantastic job hard work getting in need to be very fit and aware of the risks.

Thanks Falkor, I have heard a lot about race, gender, gay/straight potentially being an advantage but It wouldn't deter me, if you want something bad enough you'll get it!

If you can't find any of the county brigades recruiting, you could always try the airport fire fighters as another option. Gatwick has its own fire station, as do all the other airports.
 




A couple do fit the Athena poster stereotype, although both are serious letches undeserving of a classy lady like Lush. The others are all married and / or ginger.

Totally true story. The Athena poster bloke rang me up once when I was at school to tell me to stop going out with his sister 'she aint going out with no chinky bloke" I am white, European. I have a hungarian surname. Twat.

Certainly not. I know that only 10% of their work is actually fighting fires and a lot revolves around fire prevention and educating the community. But I couldn't think of a more rewarding job, plus I'm a bit of an adrenaline junkie! Currently in an office job, but it's just not for me. I need to be on my feet doing something active.

I know the guy has said he wasn't seriosu about that comment but I do quite a lot of work in equality and diversity so here's my schpiel ..

I work in the public sector, and unless the Fire Brigade is very different, which I'm sure it isn't, then there's no quotas or targets and no positive discrimination (apart from disability in some very special, rare cases).

Positive discrimination is illegal in the UK.

All the brigade would have done - as do the Police and other public bodies I imagine - is asses the make up of their workforce and see how diverse it is. Of course in most cases you find that the workforce is made up of white british people, and perhaps male white british people in the case of the FB.

They would also look at which type of people are applying, and if the figures there suggest its all white males then it is argued that something needs to be done to promote the work to all members of society.

That's all it is, it's not post-apartheid South Africa, it's just successive governments making the public sector put things in place to have their workforce reflect the diversity of the people they serve and encourage a culture of diversity in their organisations.

I looked into doing it years ago. I had a really good chat with the station officer at Roedean fire station, who was an old pal of my mums.
I was only 19 at the time and he told me to go in the forces for a few years and do it in there. Have a much better chance of getting in that way. They like ex forces.
The Fleet Air Arm was the best job I found. They have specialist fire fighting teams at Naval air stations. Best training you can get, then you have the choice of airport work or civilian fire service when you come out.
I would imagine it would be very difficult to get a job in the fire service these days with all the cuts and mergers. You can always get taken on as a retained fireman but you have to live close by to the small stations.

I have seriously considered this. Although, I've looked on some of the recruitment sites and one of the most frequently asked questions is "Will it be quicker and easier to join because I’ve been in the forces?" They say It would help with regards to discipline and the physical side of the job, but they have said everyone has an equal chance of applying and that there is no process for ex forces to transfer across, everyone has to go through the same process.

Not saying positive discrimination does happen, I really have no idea, but this is clearly nonsense. There's no reason why positive discrimination has to done explicitly and 'above board' for it to happen, just like negative discrimination (which I'm sure does happen) is not 'official'.
