I'm a fan of them all.
Beatles, Stones, Who, Kinks, Hollies, Yardbirds, Small Faces. They all defined, along with others, the pop musical explosion of the 60's.
Rock and roll was fading, all that was left was Elvis and a lot of crooners.
The Beatles were the first band to actually write music and play it with in a total new unheard of genre. Pop.
Yes in my opinion they kick started popular music as we know it today, but saying they were the greatest, I dont think so.
Give me Bruce anyday.

Waiting for Socialist Sid to air his views.... should be fun to read.

To simply sum up how I feel about them they're the only band (bar Floyd and maybe Queen) that I'd struggle to compile a top 50 best songs list for. The quality spills out of almost every song they wrote and as someone said earlier, you can compile some of their most obscure tracks and still have a fantastic album. I was born nearly 30 years after they split and they're still my favourite.

I'm not, I wish you'd both agree and get along. You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one.

That wasn't the Beatles. That was John Lennon................ which you probably knew anyway.

No - they just happened to get famous at the right time.

No - milli vanilli were easily the best.

They got away with not singing a single word of any of their songs and made millions. That is genius and makes them the best

Interesting no one reckons any band from the last 20 years?...

Probably because pretty well nobody is producing consistently good music with variety. So many bands find a formula and stick to it. Not that up on current music though. Surprised nobody has mentioned U2 the most over rated mega band of recent years.

Who do you reckon is?

There is no "best" band just as there is no best musician. There are many talented and creative examples but just because I prefer them to a scouse boy band does not make them better just what I happen to like.

Who is this scouse boy band you speak of? I thought this was a thread about the Beatles but now you are throwing in unnamed boy bands.

I agree that the Beatles are the greatest band ever, but agree with posts above citing the Kinks as a major contributing influence as well. The first LP I ever bought was "Arthur" by the Kinks, and as an early "concept" album it is still as amazing today as it was then.

You know what I mean - who for YOU is the best band in the World? Who do you think has produced the best music?

I'm surprised there hasn't been a single shout for Radiohead, who produce variety and even when they were one of the biggest bands in the world took massive risks. In that vein I believe they are the spiritual successors to The Beatles, more than Oasis.

That's no surprise. It's like most things innit. Bands, people, objects, ideas - pretty much ANYTHING needs to be in the past before people start saying it was/is the greatest ever.

Can't see how people can say the beatles copied styles then say the stones were better, the stones ripped off black American artists. Don't get me wrong the stones were a good band but the beatles and the small faces were better in my opinion
