To be honest I found it hard to tell if it was intended as a defence of secular democracy or just a bit of wog bashing.

Interesting comment. If you were coming to this cold, you might well imagine Pat Condell was just using humour as a vehicle for insulting members of a 99% non-white religion. But if, on the other hand, you knew he was a card-carrying leftie, you might then appreciate he was defending the right of all of us in a democratic, secular society to lampoon adherence to all forms of superstition - including special match-winning socks, Virgin Mary Jaffa Cakes, leprachauns, fairies and all brands of God, from Zeus to Jesus' dad.

Religion? Take it or leave it. Except in an Islamic society of course, where it’s take it or leave it and invite your own murder.

Eh?

This is a bigoted misrepresentation of most Islamic societies. Undoubtedly there are places where the zealots are in power, but to claim that secularism is incompatible with Islam is just plain wrong.

Who's claiming that? I didn't. I'm talking about apostasy - renouncing the faith - not secularism. The Qu'ran makes it clear that apostasy is punishable by death. But hey, why should people on NSC believe me? Or even you, Ed? Here's what Maryam Namazie (Spokesperson of the Council of Ex-Muslims of Britain) had to say earlier this month in the New Statesman:-

"It is because being an ex-Muslim, or an apostate, is punishable by death in countries ruled by Islamic law; even in a place like Britain people will be surprised at the threats and intimidations those who want to leave face..."

As far as I'm aware, no other religion - not even good old Catholicism - goes quite that far in persuading devotees to keep the faith!

Apostacy among Catholics is punishable by excommunication, which - in the words of St Paul - "delivers such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh" [I Corinthians 5:5]

But you seem to take such threats more seriously than most, GT. Why's that? It's almost as if you believed this sort of thing to be real.

I had to turn it off after 3 minutes. I was just bored. Are you SURE he's a comedian???

Spot on. In the same way that clown on Channel 4 (whose name escapes me, Mark someone?) was billed as 'a comedian' and basically just loved the sound of his own voice, a-preachin and a-pontificatin about various world issues and conspiracy theories until the already miniscule audience had all fallen asleep.

That wasn't even remotely funny. I refuse to accept he's a comedian, just a Daily Mail reader with a video camera, surely?

I'm all in favour of lampooning superstition. The problem (or one of them) with the video is that it is often factually wrong. Muslim extremists have been prosecuted and jailed for hate speach. There is no exemption from the law that I am aware of.

I would also have hoped that someone on the left would have noted that much of the hysteria over Islam seems to arisen as a smokescreen for the disaster that is Iraq.

I am sure we can continue the conversation at the next SoL...;)

What a head case. He did a well-prepped intro, then gradually went into rants against people based on their poorest representatives. If everyone were to be vaguely clubbed under headings led by lunatics and murderers, then 'no-one would be innocent'.
Closing mosques because of crazed Muslims?
How about closing whole countries because of insane moronic Christians?

Anyway, without going into the easy route that this idiot wants to incite with his spikey generalisms, I would rather ask who he thinks he is or wants to be, by making that video in the first place?
