Apple Iphone geeks - Help

Afternoon, Apple geeks

I'm thinking of getting Doris an Iphone for Crimbo. She is a bit of a techno spaz so thinking the Iphone will be easiest to use. As she won't use it for much more than taking the odd piccy, loading them onto Facebook and having a look at the Topshop app (yes, really), I'm thinking, as I'm a tight bastard, of getting an Iphone 3 rather than a 4.

I've asked about and been told I should get the 4 'because it's newer' Other than that blindingly obvious statement, Does the 4 do anything the 3 doesn't for someone who won't even work out how to make a call for 6 months? From the technical spec, the 3 should be fine?

Thanks in advance
Ip xx

You'll probably get too long-winded an answer from an iPhone geek...!

I looked into doing the same for my Mrs and concluded that the iPhone 3GS is the better buy - doesn't have the reception issues caused by holding the thing and does everything the average Doris is likely to need it to.

(the only thing lacking is the 'wow, you're amazing for getting me the newest version - all my friends will be sooo impressed!' factor)

For the record, I decided to buy her neither in the end! :lolol:

The key difference for me is the battery life. On my 3G it often lasts about half a day whereas I gather it can last somewhat longer on the 4.

If she'll just be using it for the things you mention, then you might as well save yourself a few quid and get the 3.

The downside might be that she'll thinking you're a tight git for getting her the 'old' one :lolol:

If she wants to take photos, The camera is much better on the iphone 4 that the 3GS, also gives you HD video if it ssomething she might like to use.

The screen on the iPhone is awesome, the retina display is much better than the 3GS but if she had the 3Gs she wouldn't realise what she wa smissing unless she saw the iphone 4 screen next to hers.

Battery life is also considerably better between the two models. I used to struggle to make it though a day without the battery running out on my 3GS now it makes a day on the 4 without any toruble at all, if careful you can make two days as well.

Apart from what I have mentioned above for what she wants you'll be fine with the 3GS.

That of course, could be a major factor, particularly if you are going for "Wow Factor" as part of the "can we afford a pair of Falmer STs" debate.

Mrs Gritty has the latest one, and I have approval for STs for me and the lad. Job done!

Thanks all. V useful. Is the battery life really that shithouse on the 3G? It winds me up enough when her Motorola sits in the corner complaining about its lack of leccy.

Just be aware that if you want to get the older version then at least get the 3GS and *not* the 3G - the 3G is old and slow and does not support many of the new features of the recent software updates.

Unfortunately for me, I'm stuck in Warwickshire so a Falmer ST is out the question especially with a 2nd kid on the way. Trying to convince the old man to get one and nick it regularly though.

The wow factor isn't a problem. Her exisitng phone barely makes calls.

Yes, I charge mine up overnight and again in the car on the way home from work. I do use it a lot mind! It doesn't do any complaining though, just switches off when the battery runs out.

On O2's website, they're currently offering some reconditioned iphone 3Gs - I did this 18 months ago - it works out cheaper than a new one and (a) should be just as good as a new one and (b) if not you take it to the Genius bar at the Apple store and they'll replace it with a new 'un.
