Got an 8.5 hour layover between flights [land at 2.30pm at PHL] and been told by the airline we can leave the airport which is nice! So any ideas of where to go and what to do for 3-4 hours?

Just trying not to get shot, stabbed or raped should keep you fairly occupied.

I used to go to Philly for work a few years back. I liked it. Lots of history and a real mixed bag of people as well. Given the time you have go and take a peek at the Liberty Bell then head down to South Street to hang out and people watch for a few hours and look around.

Deffo do the Rocky stairs and get a picture in front of the Rocky statue. the museum (where the stairs lead to) is actually very good as well.

Liberty Bell is not bad, avoid the suburbs unless you want to go home in a body bag !

There is a quality indoor market in the main town as well which is well worth a visit

Finally round it off with a Philly Cheese Steak sarny

Wrap up as well as its a tad "Steve Bould" and it can get a bit "Mork & Mindy"

Whirlwind Tour of Philly

From the Airport - Jump into a cab and asked to be taken to Headhouse Square (2nd and Locust) - Several good pubs there (Dark Horse, Get Happy or Downeys on South/Front St)

From Pub - Walk Up South Street to Jims (Great Cheese Steak)

From Jims - Walk over to (5th/Chestnut) Liberty Square for a tour of the buildings, bell etc

From Liberty - Walk up Arch St (thru China Town) to Reading Street Terminal (more food)

From Reading Street Terminal - Cab/Walk to Art Museum (Rocky Steps etc)

From Rocky Steps - Waterworks Restaurant, Drinks, view of Schuykill and Boathouse Row

Knackered? - Cab it back to the Airport

Hope that helps...............

south street is a nice place to hang out for a while. you can walk from there up to the rocky steps through the city which takes a wee while but is a nice stroll and goes via the LOVE sculpture thing.

i'd stick mainly to the downtown though, as like others have mentioned, some areas can be a bit frisky!!!
