Anyone work at Thomas Cook? wondering how staff feel about the Corfu boiler death case

Never mind not arranging checks / repairs, in the first place!

For a company promoting family holidays, their behaviour has been utterly reprehensible. I will avoid on principle, and actively encourage others to do the same.

Thomas Cook might well say they were not culpable, but they are selling something and surely they have a duty of care to guarantee their holiday is safe, other than freak accidents.

If they can't do that, then they need to change the way they work. Maybe their compensation will help...

I would imagine the staff feel it's just as terrible as everyone else does, possibly more so through association (even though the vast VAST majority will have no reason to).

Why did they get money?

I was listening to a debate on the radio earlier today. The money isn't for compensation but legal fees allocated by the Greek court. The apartment owners were blamed. Thomas Cook said they weren't able to check every single room available. One ex rep recommended that holidaymakers should take their own CO detectors with them.
That's not excusing the attitude that has been shown to the poor parents.

They could have and should have handled so many things differently , whatever the rights and wrongs the way they treated the family was disgusting and I'd imagine many people will be using other firms because of it

Desperately sad case. That said, the levels of compensation will be different because TC claim they had incurred costs in the case and, I believe, loss of business, which the Greek courts pinned on the hotel manager/owner who got custodial sentences. With regard to the amount the family received, nothing is going to compensate them for their loss but even the British courts put a value on a child's life. In 2014 a settlement of £40k was agreed for the negligent death of a 9 year old. The cold hard facts are that parents don't suffer a financial loss when a child dies.

Remains to be seen if a claim is now pursued by the parents against TC. No financial loss but, speaking as a parent, the emotional suffering will be immeasurable.

For what it is worth, we always take a CO monitor with us when going abroad.

The sense I got from it all, was TC wanting to covering their arse, then covering their costs (of bringing case against the hotel? would have thought local police would do that..)

No thought for the poor family, losing two kids.

I believe this is a case where human decency is missing from Thomas Cook as a company (most likely lawyer instigated).

The parents pain is raw and they are looking for someone to blame (quite rightly).

Absolute PR disaster handled awfully from beginning to end and will doubtless cost them millions in future sales. They cannot however, be held responsible for the condition of the hotel, they are an agent and as an agent they represent thousands of hotels with tens of thousands of rooms. Ensuring safety of the hotel can only be the responsibility of its owners and staff...
