Why don't you do it?

Women show bouncers the door as clubs opt for a caring image
By Stewart Tendler, Crime Correspondent

MORE than 500 women have been licensed to guard the doors of clubs and pubs as muscle-flexing male bouncers give way to a more caring image.

The women hold licences from the new Security Industry Authority and next month Britain’s first all-women training course will begin at a south London college. More are planned.

Trainers say that the increasing use of women reflects the fact that the traditional image of the doorman as a bruiser ready to trade punches at the drop of an insult is changing.

The modern doorman — the term “bouncer” is frowned upon as redolent of a bygone violent age — searches for drugs and weapons, has basic first aid training and takes responsibility for evacuations.

Women are seen as excellent at defusing confrontations that would turn into fights if men were involved. Clubs also want more women because an increasing number of female customers are heavy drinkers and can be very aggressive.

The women’s course is part of a drive by the authority to have all working doormen across England and Wales licensed and holding a professional qualification by April.

All licence-holders will carry SIA identity cards that can be checked against a national register. Anyone operating without a licence or anyone who employs them can be fined or jailed.

The licensing programme has already come into force in many regions and will be complete when London and the South East join in the spring.

Next month a dozen women will attend the first female course at Lambeth College and the SIA hopes that at least 75 will be licensed for London by the spring. Across the country 11 per cent of the 5,000 door staff already licensed are female.

The women will complete a two or four-day course that will teach them how to handle drunken or belligerent customers and deflect aggression. They will learn how to avoid putting themselves in danger by keeping out of the way of potential weapons and recognising the signs of an imminent attack.

Peter Ruggiero, who trains doormen, said: “A lot more girls are doing it. They have a very important role and they are not big butch girls but often slight or petite. They bring a little bit of softness. When a girl tells a customer she wants a word with him outside they are going to go but with a man they would be suspicious.”

Hazel Haynes works for a bar in Soho but she is taking the course to get the new qualification and learn the latest ideas. “They have new ideas on dealing with people trying to attack you, a bit more awareness,” she said.

The modern approach, Ms Haynes said, frowns on the type of bully-boy tactic of 20 years ago and she expects “a good learning curve in terms of psychology”.

‘I’ve ended fights between men’

WHEN Jackie Beswick first guarded the door of a club a decade ago her male colleagues would say: “What do we need a woman for?” she recalls. They soon changed their tune, faced with the need to search women customers and Miss Beswick’s ability to defuse conflict. At 5ft 5½in and about 10 stone, she has never been injured; she relies on her persuasive powers or firm restraint when necessary.

Miss Beswick, now 37, had no special training but was a keen sportswoman. She has worked at big London clubs and holds local licences issued by Westminster City Council and another London borough. She will qualify for the national licence.

A woman can sometimes take the heat out of a confrontation, she says. “I have been involved in arguments between two men where I stepped in. It does seem they don’t feel they have anything to prove by having a row with me.”

I've done more than my fair share of stopping fights when I was a Youth Club worker.
