My worst night ever thrown out of sherrys twice thrown out of the crystal rooms and banned from the cannon pub all on a monday night AND IT GOT WORSE DIDN'T MAKE WORK TILL FRIDAY
I went there once. I preferred the Bird's Nest and the Kings Club. The one time we did go, HovaBoyfriend was dripping with sweat. Wiped his brow with his hankie, and squeezed it over the balcony. So, so hot. And so, so crowded.
My memory of it is from around 1978, paying my £1 to get in and almost immediately regretting it as the horror of the music and tacky setting sank in...and then doing the same again the next Saturday. There was talk of mythical, morally-lax, female Swedish language students who would force themselves on you but I never encountered them in Sherry's, Metro, Sloopys or any of the dreadful clubs of the time. Much more in evidence were extremely wealthy young male Iranian exiles, studying at places like Davies's college, flashing their cash. Much happier in the Top Rank, New Regent etc listening to live music or the Hungry Years.
Anyone remember when - due to local bye-laws - all the clubs had to stop the music at 11pm, up the lights, offer you a finger buffet, then the music could start again. This went on right up to the early eighties if memory serves. Gadzooks!
only place to be around that time was the STARLIGHT ROOMS
good music, nice girls and you could not buy alcohol there but you could go in and out as you please with the right hand stamp
Sherrys. Four speakers and a dozen flashing lights. DJ'd there a couple of times and in the early 80's got offered the job at Revolution Disco in the Top Rank/Kings West/Odeon. Revolution was in the basement. If you look at Costa Coffee it was to the right. My old haunt was the Heart & Hand pub at the junction of East St and Kings Road. There was a basement gay bar (always took girlfriend) where, at 11pm, a plate was put on the table with a lettuce leaf and a slice of ham. Meant we could keep drinking until early hours. Good times.
