Only place in England with the pubs left open.

I know Harold Wilson used to holiday there, and Liz Costa and John Lees went 'twitching' there, but wondered if anyone else had been there?

What's it like?

Holidayed every year as a child.
Have occasionally thought about going back - it's not changed, but expensive.

Pay the extra to fly - The Scillonian (sp) is one of the worst boat journeys in UK water.

Stay on St Mary's.
Plan your days trips to the off islands.
Deffo go on an evening nature trip.
Also plan a trip to The Bishop Rock Lighthouse. (See John Noakes)

A week will be too short if you want some beach time ect.

Oh and it's The Isles of Scilly NEVER the Scilly Isles.

Cheshire Cat

The most curious thing..
It's a long swim just for a couple of dodgy pints on NYE.

Way out West
Went there many times as a kid. Actually met Harold Wilson (I ran in to the sea, forgetting that I had my watch on....a guy sat near us shouted out to warn me, and it turned out to be Harold himself!)

Fantastic swimming, but the water is COLD!

Brighton. NOT KEMPTOWN!
Whilst holidaying in Cornwall in July fifteen year's ago, we did a day trip to the Tresco Abbey Gardens. Twenty minute helicopter ride from Penzance to St. Marys, boat to Tresco and direct helicopter flight back to Penzance. Weather was superb. Gardens were stunning. One of my best day's out ever.

One place I definitely want to get to. Tresco Abbey gardens are meant to be fantastic, if you're into that sort of thing...I am, so that's what i want to see. Not sure about the wind up plane ride, It's doesn't look much bigger than a cessna!
As for the boat trip being a bit lively, can't be worse than the big jet boat to Jersey. Get a bit of atlantic swell and it becomes a vomit inducing ride from hell! It is quicker than the conventional tug boat though

We used to go regularly, and stay in a cottage on Tresco.

As with seemingly everybody else, I met Harold Wilson, in the pub.

Lovely fella. I got his autograph. I was 7.

I always fancied going fishing there
We'd go out on the boat taxis of an evening, mackerel fishing.

Crab lines and feathers.
Over the side.
Wait 2 minutes.
Pull up 8 mackerel.

One evening a massive basking shark swam under our boat, mouth gaping, through crystal clear waters.

Now that's a fookin memory.
(I don't have many good ones, from my childhood, but I'm taking that one with me, all the way)

His cottage was just up the road from us, we were above Mumford's.

I was allowed to shout commie abuse at him, from the lounge window, as told to me by pa stat.

Ah the lighter side of casual racism - different times!
