This is a bit of a nostalgia fest. March 3, 1984: David Coleman reads the results as they come in. We are a late kick off (in case you're wondering, Brighton won 1-0, Alan Young the scorer, to take us to 9th in the old Division 2).

I remember that day very well, March 3rd 1984...................................Its the day we got married...!!

Blimey. So presumably you were huddled round a TV trying to find out the result of the late kick-off?!

I think it’s an age thing - it was definitely a teleprinter when I started watching Grandstand in the 60s. I suspect it became a vidiprinter when computers began to rule the world in the 80s or similar. It was great fun though and frustrating when it sometimes hovered waiting for the next score if you were still waiting for your result!

It was a big machine that used the Telex technology.

On screen the top three-quarters was the camera looking at the teleprinter from the print head upwards, and the bottom was a bit of cardboard with a window which had the number of score draws on it.

it is Vidiprinter https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vidiprinter

the history tells us there was originally a camera on a printer, the teleprinter, replaced in the 80s with on-screen printout the vidiprinter.
