Fela Kuti - Music Is The Weapon

A 1982 film about Fela Kuti the king of Afrobeat, the crazy situation in Nigeria at that time, his religious beliefs, his fifteen wives - or was it twenty seven queens? and his provocation of the Nigerian government and what happened with that. Probably the greatest music based documentary ever.

The best documentary I've seen of late is Ken Burns' ten-parter Vietnam. It's masterful. I think he's also done series on the American Civil War and jazz, both of which I'm keen to indulge in.

Baseball a Ken Burns film is awesome.

Icarus - the most recent winner of best documentary at the Oscars and on Netflix.

It’s about Lance Armstrong and the whole doping shenanigans. To précis this I would say I’m not into road biking but still found this astonishing and captivating

Thought Icarus was about Russian doping?

Odd double post.
So I'll use this space to say I recently watched the 30 for 30 on Tommy Morrison.
I knew nothing of the fella, so that became a revealing watch.

I'm in the mood for some documentary watching. History, science, anthropology. Something along those lines. Anyone got any recommendations?

Thanks in advance!

Filtering my IMDb lists, do these come under 'anthropology'?

Catfish (an oldie but a goodie)
Deep Web (about the Silk Road website and its ilk - very thought-provoking)

Tales of the Grim Sleeper, and Aileen: Life and Death of a Serial Killer, both Nick Broomfield, do the murderer doc thing but with his usual societal slant. I was gripped and then appalled, by them both.

It is, dunno what Barnham was watching!

You’re absolutely right. I am confusing two things and have therefore had an absolute belter.

Stop at nothing: the Lance Armstrong story

Icarus: you know, that one about Russian doping.

Both are good.

*dunce*

Fiveways
Civilizations is working well so far for me. There was an interesting article which argued that, far more than its predecessor Kenneth Clark's Civilization, the major influence on this series is John Berger's Ways of Seeing, which is also well worth a look (as is the book).
