The sea was fantastic. It was warm, calm, and refreshing. And the beach at Widewater was busy, and lots of beach huts were in use.

Having spent the morning on a rugby touchline, it was most welcome to have a dip in the sea. We were standing in the surf mediterranean-style chatting and talking to various friends that showed up. It was absolutely fantastic, and possibly the last time it will be like that this year.

Good call Mum, the beach was fab yesterday...I discovered the joys of kayaking between the piers in Brighton and am totally hooked (not to mention sunburnt and stiff in the shoulders). I'm now thinking of joining the kayak club down by Peter Pan's. There is simply nowhere better on earth than Brighton on a day like that.

true MoH, very true.

Widewater was very passable as well.

A question. Does the direction of the longshore drift depend on whether the tide is going in or out ?

I was on Brighton Beach watching the RedBull Vert show, pretty damn impressive! Loads of beer and totty too!

On the subject of going for a dip, decided to have a paddle in Kingston Beach (Shoreham) at about midnight saturday....dunno why though!

DKM - The longshore drift does indeed depend on the tide.

There are 2 factors - a) time of tide b) size of tide

a) The tide ‘enters’ and leaves the channel from the west… Therefore as the tide is on the push (rising, leading up to high tide), the longshore drift runs West to East, and as the tide drops ( towards low tide), current runs East to West. To complicate this, you have to remember that further out to sea (ie. 200m plus), things happen earlier than on the shore… example, if high tide is at 3.00pm this is a ‘shore’ measurement, and high tide out at sea will actually be approx 1 ½ hrs earlier, and by about 2/2.30pm there will be a current flowing in a Westerly direction (you get a period of slack with little currents over high and low tide for about an hour)

b) Size of tide – simply the higher the tide the stronger the current. A high tide of 5.2m will see weak longshore drifts, whereas bigger tides in the region of 6m+ will see more action.

Note - when there are strong onshore winds and storm surf, these currents may be affected by small rips on beaches, or currents alongside man made groynes etc… but people rarely swim under these condiditons.

Respect Dave C. When I was on the beach it must have been approaching high tide, but the drift was already east-west. Well you live and learn.

The RNLI boat was warning those in inflatables that the tide was about to turn (from high) and there was going to be a strong "rip".

I went in for a half hour or so from about 10:30 with the folk from Brighton SC, frollicking under the Pier...

...immediately after the usual session in the Prince Regent.

Most excellent temperature. May have to go in again before the week is out.

Swam at Lancing, beautiful, but have to walk to other side of beach work currently going on.

Still it was peaceful round the huts as only users there for a change.
