Anyone ever been to Kefalonia?

Just got back yesterday from holiday and what a lovely blisteringly hot Mediterranean Greek island it was. For the majority of you on here who probably haven't been due to the abundance of Greek islands it is situated off the north west coast of Greece and is north of Corfu.

It was just a really lovely place. The people were friendly and the Tavernas and bars situated on the beaches were lovely, one even had a pet crocodile that you could pointlessly watch as you ate knowing that the mesh surrounding it couldn't hold Arthur Askey, let alone a humongous crocodile.

Everything was great about the place accept the fact that they took no care of animals and there where stray dogs practically everywhere, hungry and scavenging for food and some of the drivers out there are awful and have a tendency to beep their horn every few seconds for no apparent reason.

I would recommend to anyone that you visit Kefalonia although if you are trying to make 100 consecutive home games and build on your total, don't accidentally book the holiday when you are three games away!

I went back in 2000.... moaned at the girlfriend because was bang on top of Euro tournament.
Spoke to tour guide who said that all the bars would have tv's & would be showing games... we must have stayed in the quietest resort - "Poros"...
No tv's evident. Sulked & accepted that would miss the games, entered a restaurant & was greeted with.. "you want football", my obvious answer was swift & a very unanimous "YES"... with that - the waiter went back inside & returned moments later wheeling out a tv & put it right by our table... RESULT...

So, yes - Loved the place & would go back :drink::clap:

Yes. Me and the Mrs have just come back from an eastern Med cruise, which stopped at Kefalonia on the way up to Croatia.

What an utterly stunnning place - it has been voted one of the top 10 most scenic places in the World.

We will be doing a villa holiday there next year.

It is well worth doing a villa holiday and I would go through "Kefalonian homes", a company run by an English woman who's names slips my mind but their headquarters is in Kefalonia and there are some very friendly English people running it.

We stayed in 2 villas each for a week and woke up every morning to views of the bay and the mountain range. The place to visit is the underground lake in Melissani. Here are a few pictures.

Went last year on the cruise....really interesting place. We took a boat trip out to the other side of the island dolphin spotting and passed over the spot where the germans put 4,000 Italian troops on a ship and as it was leaving the island they torpedoed it and killed everyone on board!

Interesting that the island was completely destroyed by earthquake early last century and they used the rubble of the houses to build the harbour!

Went last year for a fortnight in a lovely villa over on the western peninsula which isn't as well visited as the south eastern part. Would recommend the island, though was surprisingly more expensive than we expected. Greece no longer cheap in short.

Lots of stray dogs though; they're not known for their love of animals, the greeks. They shoot most strays at the end of each year. I ended up buying dinner for some on my last day - poor things - went into a shop and bought those tin foil meals them as part of my charity UK based charity "Dogs Abroad"

Went there in 1998 - wonderful island.
Visited Fiskardo this year on a day trip from Lefkas and am thinking of going there for 2 weeks next year.
Thanks to murraymints for the info on the villa company - will check that out.
However due to the euro/recession/whatever Greece is no longer cheap (although it's cheaper than the UK). BUT it's got much better weather, nicer people and cleaner air so
