Put £70.01 of diesel in at ESSO Patcham, just noticed on receipt, it says i paid £71 & got 99p change BUT i gave 70 quid & a penny, this isn't the 1st time ive noticed this, not just at this garage. Is this a staff 'perk' of some sort?

Till still adds up the same at the end of the night though, can't be any sort of perk, just a dumbass cashier that has entered the wrong amount tendered.
Must be the job for dumbass's then cos like i said, ive noticed 'mistakes' on receipts from several different garages

Surely it would have been easier to have put £70.00 of diesel in?
I did try.

Seems odd as I'm pretty sure the pumps are linked directly to the till, at that garage at least (I usually use that one myself).

Surely the 99p Store would be more appropriate?!

Don't give em the penny, they never need it, if you do it for 40 years you could drive to the moon on it

My local garage has a dish on the counter where you can either put your change in or take a penny out for instances when you go past the round £ mark , like this £70.01.

not sure its the same, but i notice alot of cornershops will ring somthing up for a £1 more than it is but give you correct change, placing the odd pound on the side as you leave. i've concluded this is a tax fiddle, taking a little money out of the business untaxed.

Wouldn't ringing up more for a sale mean they would pay more tax?

We don't have a 99p or Pound store in Leek,it's Wilko or Home Bargins for us.

I work in a shop and the amount of colleagues who don't understand that it makes no difference what you enter into the till as the amount the customer gives you, since the amount staying in the till will still be the same, is bewildering. Not as depressing as the amount of people who ring in the exact amount given, since they can't work out (or don't think they can work out) what change would be required if, say, someone gave £5.05 for a £4.05 order.

Maybe the people in the corner shop are over-pricing low tax goods and underpricing high tax ones like booze and fags?

Not in this case.

The VAT is still going to be on the 70.01 regardless of whatever they type in for the tendered amount. Could have proffered a £100 note (if you still have them?) and got 29.99 in change and it'll still be the same.

Next time, turn round before you get to the door and tell him there is a problem with your change. Show him the receipt - it states there what you gave him and the change due. You obviously mistook a pound coin for a penny when you handed it over. You haven't left the premises so the cashier is obliged to correct the mistake. Now it's YOUR turn to head on down to the 99p shop ... win!
