Hi,

Ive seen a property I like in Portugal and the price looks good to me...obviously I will be going to view and do all the needed requirements of having it checked out.

But has anyone got a mortgage on an overseas property either with a uk based company or an overseas one and if so how easy was the process?

I have a 10% deposit and enough for fee's approx 3-5k.

Just wondered if anyone has any advice and has done the process themselves.

You will only get a mortgage for a maximum 80%. Go to Conti Financial Services Company is Conti, based in Brighton. good info on the site and they are usually very helpful if you call.
Banif Bank are probably the biggest lender in Portugal, but I don't know much about their lending criteria

we've just bought a villa (off plan ) on the silver coast near obidos/ praia del rey golf resort. goin out there next week to finalise everything. we got an 80% mortgage with millenium bank.
you also have to have a fiscal number for tax reasons but you can get this when you open a bank account.
word of warning thou, the portuguese do things at a completely different pace to us in the uk, we were supposed to complete in march and only just getting round to this now... they are always on holiday!!!

will get my plug in now for the villa, and particually for anyone who likes golf. contempory3 bed , 3 bathroom villa with its own pool, right next to praia del rey (voted one of the top courses in europe) available soon

Use a good agent. They should help you out, although in my experience most of them don't. Which is great for us because our service is top class!

And ALWAYS use an INDEPENDENT local lawyer. Not one in UK. Not one provided by the developer. Not one in Lisbon. One in the area where you are buying. One who you can check is independent and also speaks good English. Although we are in Spain my lawyer is part Portuguese and may be able to suggest someone if you need one.
