Portsmouth itself is still a ****ing shithole. Gunwharf Quays is fine if you want chain shops and chain restaurants.

Is the right answer. The area around the i360 is looking promising though. Really wish the marina was sorted out though, I see they are adding new flats there, it has so much potential.

Was there on Saturday - great place to shop, and the historic shipyard is awesome.

Having a day off work, we went down to bosham this afternoon. Really lovely place , fab pub and great long walk around the inlet. Decided to go down to Portsmouth as the radio said that the a27 was blocked.

Headed down to gun wharf keys and the area around the spinnaker tower. What a transformation around the old waterfront and dockyard and to be honest, I always thought that brighton seafront was why people headed down here, but it is a really superb design and puts brighton to shame.

If you have a spare day, pop down to the area. The shopping is great, outlet stores etc, there are plenty of cinemas and bowling alleys etc, and a great selection of restaurants and bars.

Last time I went there, it was a total shithole but I was pleasantly surprised. I do hope the area around the i360 is developed to the same standard.

Gun wharf Quays is what Brighton Marina COULD be.

Worthing
I recently had the 'pleasure' of spending a tea time in Tiger Tiger on Gun Wharf Quays drinking half price beverages for 2 hours. Filthy, dirty place. Keep out. Some of the old Portsmouth is ok though, but some of it isn't.

Had lunch on Warrior last month, with a wander round Gunwharf Quay before. Just superb. The shopping centre makes Churchill Square feel like Lagos.

But most places have their goods and bads. Much of Portsmouth itself is awful but in truth my lovely city has half a dozen grotty streets (eg West Street, central Kings Road, Palace Pier approach, Edward Street) by which some outsiders judge us. Crawley is pleasant in places, terrible in others. Parts of Hastings are lovely. It depends on what you want and where you go and what the weather is like - it worries me when people write off a place on the back of a few visits. It can be a bit disrespectful - everywhere is someone's home.

Just back from a couple of days in Southsea. Gunwharf Quays is all right if you like identikit soul-less chain shops and eating places. Great views from Spinnaker. Tried to go and see Mary Rose etc but there was a 'power surge', so went and explored Southsea instead. Some nice restaurants/coffee shops and enjoyed mooching round the shops in Albert Street area. Good record shop. D-Day Museum is well worth a visit.

I posted something similar a few years ago.
We had a 5 day break on the south coast. One day was spent in central Brighton, and I accept we may have been unlucky on the day we visited. but it was dirty with uncollected refuse spilling out everywhere, dossers with dogs on bits of string sleeping rough around the Level and chaotic traffic. We ate in a touristy type place near the seafront and received expensive but frankly indifferent service from an eastern European woman who seemed more interested in playing with her phone than looking after customers. It was a bit embarrassing having grown up in the area and really wanting to take my family there for the first time. Needless to say we haven't been back and I can't imagine we ever will. It was a bad day.

The following day we went to Portsmouth, What a contrast. It felt vibrant, modern and like money had been invested. We parked no problem, ate in Gun Wharf, received outstanding service - with the children in particular being fussed over with crayons and colouring pads so Mrs Nylon and me could eat in some sort of peace. We had a great view across the water without traffic roaring past and it just felt like a pleasant, easy experience that we all enjoyed.

I wish I could say it was the other way around, but Brighton really needs to get its act together. It is dirty, unwelcoming and worst of all, complacent.

Gunwharf is well worth a visit and Old Portsmouth is good for pubs.
Steer clear of Commercial Road, it has not changed since the 70s.
It is a good day out if you go to the right places.

Regularly go down to gun wharf have been doing so for years. Only part of pompey that is remotely worth visiting though!
