At the '82 World Cup Argentina allocated their squad numbers alphabetically which led to Ardilles getting the Number 1 jersey. I think he's the only outfield player to ever wear '1' at a major tournament, maybe ever?



And when Derek Riordan returned to Hibs from Celtic in 2008, his favourite 10 jersey was already allocated which resulted in this:

Seem to recall in the 70s in one European home game, Liverpool swapped all their numbers around (2 to 11) to confuse the opposition. Obvioulsy not permitted today.
Must say I'm not bothered by what number a player wears or where he lies up.

I have a real obsession with players having the "correct" squad number for their position if they have a number between 1-11

1: Goalkeeper
2. Right Back
3. Left Back
4. Defensively minded central midfielder or perhaps a centre back
5. Centre Back
6. Centre Back- perhaps a defensive midfielder
7. Right Midfielder
8. Central midfielder- preferably your midfield GENERAL
9. Big centre forward
10. Smaller centre forward/attacking midfielder
11. Left Midfielder

anything outside of this is OBNOXIOUS so with that in mind was anyone else FUMING at Morgan thingy in the Everton midfield wearing NUMBER ****ING TWO

Given the choice would you prefer that we dispense with the squad numbers altogether and revert back to the time that the starting 11, no matter who they are, always wear numbers 1-11?

When I started watching football Goalkeepers would wear the same shorts and socks as the rest of the team!!!

And they all wore green jerseys unless they were internationals when they wore yellow.

We currently have 63 professionals on the books, and given that 6 scholars have also been involved in the Checkatrade Trophy matches (where squad numbers are also used), you are going to get shirt numbers up in the 60s, 70s or even higher.

I don't know of such a public listing, but you can find out the numbers of the U-23/U-18 players who have appeared so far in the Checkatrade Trophy matches this season by looking at the club website:-

Under Matches, click on Checkatrade Trophy. Click on the Results tab, and then click on the "Match Report" option for the two games. Then click on the "Line-ups" tab.

One note: Sanchez was listed as being no. 61 for the Oxford United match, but he actually wore no. 31 as he did in the MK Dons fixture.

So would I. I would also get rid of sponsor logos on the shirts. I don't care how much money they bring in. They really spoil the look of the shirt with the very odd exception. I would also insist on both teams playing in their first strip unless there was a genuine clash of colours.

I'd quibble with the OP - surely if we're being traditional, the second striker should be 8 (e.g. Allan Clarke at Leeds) and the midfield general 10 (Johnny Giles)? That said, John Hurst, the Everton central defender in the late 60s, always wore number ten, so even then there were aberrations.

Beat me to it. On that topic, though, didn't attacking midfielder Peter Cormack wear the no.5 shirt at Liverpool?

what tugs at my OCD-lite annoyance is the team listing on the screens

Keeper is always first - despite the number, then the rest are numeric

despite their position

it should be listed as Keeper, Defenders, mid, attackers

There's a lot of things about the old days, i.e. 1970s that I think were better and shirts numbered 1 to 11 are one them. The 'keeper always wore green in league games , unless you played Plymouth , and there was only 1 substitute. ...

I liked the goalkeepers in green tops .... and the ref and linesmen in black.
