I have a green acer tree in a Pot and in the last two weeks, it has developed a white mould on the trunk.

It looks like the beginnings of a mushroom type growth.

Is it worth trying to kill it off or will it be ok to leave it?

Acer's are notoriously fickle ..........you could try an anti-fungal but make it weak because as I said Acer's are very fickle.

acer advice

I have three acers in pots. The only advice I can give is that they prefer to be out of full sun and wind as the leaves become scorched and have you planted it in acidic soil, it should be ericacious soil not just multi purpose.
Put it in the shade and see what happens. Might be okay for next year.

OK - while we're on Gardener's Question Time, why isn't my Azalea Japonica flowering? Shrub about a foot high. Bought last year. In a pot. Plenty of sunshine but not too much. Watered (although I may have let it get a bit dry earlier in the year). AND I forked out for a whole bag of proper azalea-type compost, as Sussex soil apparently aint what they like.

WHERE ARE MY FLOWERS!!!!!!

Well you went wrong letting it go dry earlier in the year. You have to water the buggers alot during the spring to get em to flower.

You could well be over watering it. Suggest you repot it with a a good degree of new compost and be careful to ensure the drainage is good in the pot (put some broken pots over the hole at the bottom to ensure it doesnt get blocked)

I have the same on my acers DTG. It hasn't seemed to harm them thus far. I think it may be a combo of heat sun and damp condtitions.
