Any espresso nuts out there?

Having only recently returned to Brighton after three years in Crete, I'm really out of touch with the local foodie scene. So I'm looking for some serious advice.

Anyone know the best place to buy top-notch, freshly roasted espresso beans? I mean the bright, shiny, dark roast kind that produce the wonderful, chocolatey, nutty sweet brew that you can only usually get in authentic Italian restaurants.

So far, I've been disappointed with Redroaster, in St James's Street. Right on, trendy, lots of info about the different beans, but to be brutally honest, nothing like the flavour I'm looking for.

Brighton being what it is, I'm sure there must be more than a couple of consistently excellent sources. But where?

Ladies and gentlemen, your votes please…

Not in Brighton but you can't beat the Algerian Coffee Store in Soho. It's the dog's bollocks

There used to be a decent coffee shop in Edward Street, I think it was called Jury's or Drury's, not sure if its still going but its worth checking.

I use Hasbean also, beans are always roasted the same day they are sent out, first class, so 24 hours old when you get them at the most. Usually last for 2 weeks in their bags and then in a airtight container. Top class service also, very friendly

There's also the small batch coffee company, next to street sounds by hove station

This is a good shout. I wake every morning to the smell of roasting coffee from this place. Delicious. I believe they supply a lot of the coffee shops in town so must be pretty decent.

I love the smell of coffee but haven't touched it for about five years as I was like Danny Dyer on crack after a strong cuppa. Very sensitive to caffeine.

I think Red Roaster has gone down in quality recently, sadly, and my current Brighton & Hove favourites are:

Coffee @ 33 on Trafalgar Street (this has become my regular pre match coffee stop off before boarding the train for Falmer)

Ground on St George's Road, Kemp Town (Ground Coffee House - Brighton's Award Winning Favourite)

Small Batch Coffee Co. who have shops on Goldstone Villas and Church Road, Hove as well as doing the forecourt coffee at Brighton station. The Goldstone Villas branch is their roastery and has a proper dedicated bean shop. (Small Batch Coffee: Home)

I'm not an espresso man myself but do consider myself somewhat of a quality coffee connoisseur. These three places produce excellent coffee in my opinion.

If you give them a try do let me now your thoughts, as I'd like to know how they compare to an Espresso fan

Next thing, you'll be telling me I should try shopping at Asda.

No, but if you want ready-ground coffee the best supermarket coffee I've ever had is Aldi's Ethiopian - it beats the crap out of anything from Sainsbury's or Tesco. Only the Ethiopian one, mind - the Costa Rican and Brazilian taste like powdered dog shit.

Many thanks, everyone. Some really helpful suggestions there, which I'll follow up right away. And report back, should anyone be remotely interested.

This is anorak stuff, to be sure, but nothing to rival the 10 squillion-post mega-thread about chilies.

Marwood in Ship Street does a lovely cup but I'm not cool enough to go in there
