Any computer tecchies out there?

Got a free afternoon and am going to attempt to rescue the computer from an impending doom.

One problem is that whenver I have My Documents/My Computer/Word document up, when I click on the cross to close it, it takes about 20 seconds then automatically opens up internet explorer (even though we've got AOL for the internet).

Anyone know why it does this and how to stop it?

Cheers!

Well assuming you have the CD for it I'd start by uninstalling Word and reinstalling it. You'll find it easier to uninstall Office and then reinstall the lot. Try that and let me know what happens. The other question is does this happen to all Word Docs ? If so try copying a Word Doc to another directory, open it and then close it and then what happens.

This is a bit odd so I am looking for clues.

Thanks. Will give it a try but need to find the word CD! Just wondering though, is it necessarily just a problem with word if it happens when trying to colse down My Documents/Pictures/Computer etc too?

It's really difficult to say. It's as though IE is being executed as part of the Windows operating system. I would have an idea depending what happens when you try opening a Word Doc in from and other directory. That would be a good place to start I think. PM me if you need help. You may not need to uninstall Office after all on reflection.

Excuse my ignorance, but what do you mean by 'another directory'. I'm assuming that means other than my documents. What sort of place?

Thanks for your help!

Yes, I would suggest you copy a Word Doc onto the root of your 'C' drive. Open it there from Explorer and then close it to see what happens. That should indicate whether it's a problem with 'My Documents' or your Word Exe file. Well, it'll give a clue anyway.

Could try help, then detect and repair

The trouble with that is that unless it's a simple problem then it'll just tell you to talk to somebody who might know ! It's a weird one though. The fact that it doesn't just crash is puzzling !

Try this:
Open Internet Explorer, go to Tools > Internet Options > Advanced and click button "Reset Internet Explorer Settings"

No need to reinstall Word. Within any office application click help > detect and repair. You might need the CD in whilst it does what it needs to.

That only usually picks up obvious faults, this one is odd.
