The problem is it gets to the window where it says plug in the blue usb cable then it goes nowhere else. There is power to the unit from the comp as there is a power light on the ADSL box.

I suspect that the comp may be too light its a cyrix and I think its 120mhz but it can run xp pro (as it is) but I am confused how it gets this far if this is the case. What normally happens is a window comes up asnd says upgrade the coputer you fool its too slow for this programme (OK so I'm paraphrasing a bit but you know what I mean).

Any suggestions on how to solve the problem?

Have spent an hour in 2 goes to the helpline tried everything they suggested but no joy.

Falmer, soon...
If you've eliminated the BIOS.

Do the USB ports feature in the device list? If so, check drivers, then cable, then modem...

(this is why I always recommend ADSLrouters...)

So it doesn't pick up the Modem when you plug it into the USB port ?

Barnets on the right track go into Device manager and check to see if the USB dvices are present. To get into device manager go into control panel, then administrative tools , then computer management and click on device manager (you are using XP aren't you?). If it is installed OK you should have something written Universal Serial Bus Controllers, if not you will probably have a yellow question mark relating to the device. If there is a yellow question mark for your USB device (did you say it was a USB card that has just been installed ?) then you will need to reinstall the drivers that came with the card. Then try reconnecting your USB modem.

If everything looks OK in Device manager i am not sure.

I am with Barnet on the router option too, a lot less hassle.

I know from previous investigations that the USB controllers are there. Yes its a pci usb card (USB 2) and there are no big yellow ? (can't you tell I've been onto a helpline!).

I think I will take out one of me laptops and see if it installs OK on that if it does then I know the problem is with the puta (I still suspect its just not got what it takes to run ADSL or to power usb right.)

Bob I'm no expert just know how to fix what goes wrong cos it seems to go wrong too often around me! + people think i'm an expert so keep asking me to sort out their problems for them.

ADSL - computer should be simple you put in the software you plug in the usb when told and then it all goes through on auto. 5 mins at most.

This has had me at it for 3 hours today before I gave up with it.

Of course the simple answer would be that telewest spend some more dosh and install cable to the area then they can sort him with BB.

If its any consolation I ahve had greif with USB cards in old PCs before now. The same sort of thing happening.

I would of thought a 120mhz machine would groan a bit under XP, how much memory is there in it?

Definately try another machine if you have one thats, got to be the best bet as a starting point even just as a test.

Good Luck i am going for a pint :drink:
