Up your alley
Indeed, they're a red herring. Scotland think of themselves as a 'small' nation but in fact with a population of about 5 million they're bigger than the likes or Uruguay (about 3 million) and Uruguay have won the World Cup twice. The Soviet Union for all its size never won a World Cup.

Once you get over *licks finger" a couple of hundred thousand it ceases to be a real factor. In fact one could argue that bigger populations become a bit of a hindrance as you end up with about twenty or so players who are all much of a muchness and you end up chopping and changing to try and find a good team. And no matter how big your population you're only allowed to have eleven of them on the pitch at any one time!

Since Uruguay won in 1950, World Cup winners have been West Germany, Brazil, England (in 3 days time will be 50 years to the day), Argentina, Italy, France, Spain and Germany.
All minnows!

No, they're not 'minnows', you've missed the point. I was saying that over a very small critical mass there is no correlation between the result of a football match and the sizes of the relevant populations - as Uruguay proved in the last World Cup against us. (And would you bet against them winning the WC again before we do?)
