In years gone by it may have.

But now players can essentially choose their number (i think) therefore no. it meens nothing

What's happened with Whing is quite sad really. Player of the season, a couple of bad games, injury and has not really had a chance to prove himself again.

As Whing is named as number 2, then I imagine he must have some place in Gus' plans for us for next season. Cover for injuries, etc, he really wouldn't have been allowed the squad number if he was being shipped out.

If he was only 50k would have been nice to have him as backup but looks link Whing will be staying if we can't find anyone else interested.

He might be down as no 2 but as others have said his name wasn't on the back of the no 2 shirt at the photoshoot which kind of points towards him not keeping it.

Could well be Gus showing some respect to Whingy. Given that nobody else has come on for Whing, he is still our player so it would be somewhat mean (and unnecessary) to take his number from him. Gus has already praised Whng's professionalism over the decision not to take him to Portugal.

If he goes then the number can be reused - if he stays and we get an injury crisis then better to have a happy player than a disillusioned one.
