I can't help but feel a little sorry for Andy Naylor over this issue. It's clear that he had a source who he regarded as reliable, but who seriously let him down with the information about these transfers.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems to me that his relationship with the club has deteriorated markedly over the last few months. I can't help but think that he burnt his bridges when he published that story over the summer about why Oscar quit the club. That article sided firmly with Oscar and portrayed the club in quite a negative light - the club are hardly likely to want to do him any favours after that. It does leave him in quite an unenviable position, given his remit at The Argus.

It's an occupational hazard. If you look round the country, it's probably more unusual for there to be good relations between a club chairman and the city newspaper football guy

He lived ten doors down from me as a kid in Woodingdean, went to Longhill and BHASVIC.

He's not the easiest person to talk to, but he is reasonably objective, and doesn't just spin stories from the club.

Should a journalist not challenge the clubs views and just go along with the status quo?
Not quite sure why there is such criticism about Andy who has written some great stuff over the years and continues to challenge authority in the same way as people do on North Stand Chat - it really is not very different.
As for the Stoke City sniping, surely his impartiality makes him more qualified to write from a balanced perspective. Give him a break, he is just doing his job and long may it continue.

Very harsh and, yes, extremely poor taste.

It seem obvious to me that the club are restricting access to players far more than they did before and Naylor is having to feed off scraps to meet the high demand for leads for the paper/website. Maybe the new training ground and the logistics around it means having a quick chat with a player is harder than before. Protecting the BHAFC brand must also be far more a priority than years gone by.

This would appear to be illustrated by Naylor resorting to quoting the Albion's new media darling Adam Virgo for one lead story this week and even another journo on the Clayton transfer. Also with FFP putting more than a few jobs at risk at the club the old "insider" contacts are probably few and far between these days.

Maybe if the club worked a little more positively with Naylor it wouldn't be embarrassed or irritated by some of his more desperate-looking articles and we as fans might be informed in a way beyond just the bland output of pre and post match interviews.
