...he rates Lynch and even Mayo ahead of Richards or Livermore for left back at Crewe.

Lynch in race to be fit
10:47pm Tuesday 5th August 2008

By Andy Naylor »

Albion are sweating on the fitness of Joel Lynch for Saturday's first game of the season at Crewe.

Lynch is in pole position to occupy the left-back spot, providing he recovers from a groin injury sustained in the first half of last Saturday's friendly at Luton.

The 20-year-old defender missed training again today and boss Micky Adams said: "We won't take any chances if he's not fit."

If Lynch is ruled out it could prompt a fairytale return for Kerry Mayo, re-signed by Adams after Albion released him at the end of last season.

Mayo is among the contenders at left-back, along with Matt Richards, David Livermore and Adam El-Abd.

How many games has Richards played pre-season? I think not many and I doubt he is match fit.

If Richards isn't fit (and he said last week that he would be ready) then surely Livermore seems more logical to fill the gap with Mayo on the bench?

Chamberlain isn't playing at Crowboro' tonight so wonder if he is going to be on the bench as midfield cover come Saturday if Livermore does play at the back?

Maybe we are trying to play all five centre halves (Lynch at left back, Hawkins and Elphick in central defence, El Abd in centre mid and Virgs up front).

Now there's a problem solved:D

Been wondering how to fit them all in

Eleven words i hoped never to hear again! :nono:

I am not a big fan but I can see the sense in using KM until Richards gets match fit, remember he also missed a big chunk of last season. I suggest this is exactly why Adams gave him a new contract. Must confess I didn't see cover possibly being needed so quickly.

MA may of course decide that 1.5 games is enough to slot Richards straight in.

There's always a possibility that MA, who took Richards on the say so of the other coaches, hasn't liked what he's seen just yet. Don't forget, he did look very average in his first few games down here last year until he got match fit.

I would be very surprised if Virgo & Livermore didn't start. Virgo centre-half and Livermore at left-back IMO. Would expect to see El-Abd & Thomson in midfield.

I would be suprised if Livermore plays left back. I would rather see Mayo there and Livermore in midfield (although obviously I would rather Richards plays there).
