Think he certainly has a shot at it. A lot of people said it was bound to be rooney but you've got to put his achievment in perspective" apart from creating an abnormal amount of hype surrounding an 18 year old, his goals didn't get england that far. Maybe if he hadn;t got injured...

But Freddy, he's actually a great "personality" AND he's bloody good - coming close to being one of the best allrounders ever for england. He'd get my vote - unless Paula radcliffe wins the marathon

Let's get back to the true meaning of this award - he is probably one of the biggest box-office sportsmen in this country. He may not be the best but is that what it should be about.

Discuss!

S'only cricket innit?

Let the real sport begin!

Met Freddie Flintoff in NZ a couple of years ago and what a top chap - not in any way arrogant like a lot of cricketers and a real down to earth guy.

When he got a wicket the other day you could hear him mouthing "Freddie's back" but again, its not arrogance, its just jovial fun.

Would get my vote. And I disagree, I really think he is that good.

I look forward to seeing him in action against the Aussies. There is no doubt that next year they will target both him and Harmison as the key players.

He bought my mate a pint a couple of years back and was apparently a very nice bloke. He's got to have a shot at the award.

Those who are interested in cricket will probably regard him as the best Englishman to play the game since Beefy. Just seeing Lara's fields that are set when he comes in is very amusing.

Bit early to be thinking of the BBCs shit program of the year award, but as our olympic team looks pretty hopeless then it could be between Flintoff, Rooney, and for my vote Jenson Button.

Who's Andrew Flintoff? Darts?

No idea. I'm assuming cricket because of the thread but thats the first time I've heard his name. Bring on the Albion.

To be honest I think he is the best player we have. Bowlers fear him and he is the bowler that tends to get Lara (once the worlds greatest, possbly still the greatest) out. He has the ability to change a test match in the space of a few overs be it with the bat or with the ball and is also the best slip catcher we have. He is our talisman.

Well said Chappers. I've been watching the test matches over here in OZ. The Ozzies won't admit to it but they actually rate the current England setup as the best for ages. Several Aussies have mentioned Flintoff as our dangerman, think we'd all go along with that.

Man for man we are as good as what they currently have. If we had a spinner (ala Warne, Murali, Kumble) we'd beat anyone on any pitch. Next years Ashes series will be the best ever I reckon!

Spoken like a true Brit...

What I actually meant was that he may not be the best sportsman we've got. He's not Daley Thompson or Paula Radcliffe - Cricket doesn't require the dedication that these sports do. Probably should have worded that better.

My point was that this award seems to have become a popularity contest - hence Beckham always there or there abouts. If it was based on success alone, Phil Taylor should win every year. But as it is called Sport's Personality of The Year, there should only be one winner - Freddie. Paula Radcliffe will probably win again if she wins gold but she is not the same box office draw or "personality" as Freddie.
