It has been brought to my attention that through the archives of this great organ (NSC), I have been guilty of a travesty of judgement. Previously it was reported that waistcoat man, also known as Sir Gareth Southgate, is a football coach with three flat tyres and a smashed windscreen. A man with no more idea about football than a Brighton supporter, back in 1998, standing on the end of the pier (the West pier) with a seagull on his head. I am delighted to confirm that Lord Southgate of Croydon (viscount Stadclad) is one of the greatest visionaries of, er, the beautiful game, and will deliver certain glory to the nation with his Top Selections, incisive coaching and that.

And while I am in a genuflectory posture, it would only be correct to deliver a heartfelt apology to Harry Maguire. He may have a head of slab, but inside that slab is the football brain of a central defender. Tonight his masterful performance, passing the ball to other players, and whatnot, was the sort of thing that won us two world wars and one world cup. Doo dah. I am happy to correct any possible misunderstandings, for example the time I called him a traffic cone, the gift that keeps on taking, and everything that is wrong about football.

Let that be an end to it.

HWT, proud to be right behind England.

Steady on.

I'm a Southgate Fan Boy. But I do acknowledge he is no master tactician. My liking for him is his ability to bring the team together as one and make them hungry to do well.

Half the battle, perhaps more than that, in international management is being liked by your players. And I don't think England have had a manager so clearly appreciated as he is. He has top man management skills.

For me, Capello was the best tactician of our time. And we all know how that turned sour.

No need to bridle. My low comedy was delivered from the sofa of chastenedment. Chastisement, even. It was an excellent performance and I cannot quibble over it. I was quite pleased Dunk didn't come on and fluff his lines. Onwards and upwards (to being knocked out in the quarter finals by a plucky, er, Scotland).

If we win something under Southgate he will eclipse Sir Alf. Most certainly.

Stan Collymore talked about that side of the game last Friday on TS ….as you stated on how GS is liked by his players ….making each and everyone feel part of the setup…getting rid of the cliques that had existed…..he was full of praise for him

Southgate is going to remembered as one of the most successful England managers of all time and most people will forget things like picking Maguire and Phillips when they don't kick a ball for their clubs instead of players like Dunk and JWP, but I won't be one of them.

Massive asterix next to his tenure for me, successful despite himself.
