Depends if youe watching it Live (at the stadiuim) or on the box....

For me, the NHL is top notch live at the stadium but impossible to follow on the telly - even with HD. MLB is a bit hit and miss (lol) - the new Yankee and Mets stadiums are great places to watch it and TV coverage is pretty good here in NYC. NFL at the stadium is an experience to say the least (I went to see the Raiders V the Bears) but I think its better on the box (especially if you like all the analysis and replays.

NBA is my number one - purley because its the first US sport I remember - my team is the Phoenix Suns - started supporting them way back when Sir Charles was playing for them. Fortunately, work has taken me to PHX a number of times so normally catch 2 - 3 games live per year and the rest on the box.

The MLS on the other hand is absolutley PONY - they are really trying to promote it over here but just doesnt seem to be progressing that well - if you take ESPN as the barometer then its NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, MLS (in that order) with all the college sports somewhere in between. The Premier League gets more coverage

You see, I'd have thought it is the other way around..

Having watched about 10 games live I would say its more enjoyable in the arena rather than on telly as you can actually see the puck and you also see the "off the Puck" action. Plus, the US are pretty good at the extras at the stadium including the T Shirt gun, free stuff and the ability to order beer and have it delivered to your seat

Is it expensive? I'd imagine to see the puck you'd have to be pretty close to the action?

I 'care' about baseball, it's a whole shitload better than cricket or rounders. Whether a big game or a regular league one, it's enjoyable to watch or just kick back and get into the scene and atmosphere. It is quintessentially American in style and history, and it's for all-comers. You don't actually need to think much about the game to enjoy the occasion either - just be there, and you will know what I'm saying.

Basketball is essentially for freaks of nature, lanky uncultured and undereducated do well, where 'normal' sized people have little chance. The scoring is too regular, and tactically it appears...bereft of any.

Football is all tactics. "You have to KNOW the game, get into the rules" say the aficionados pointedly, as if it is only exclusive to people with the sense to learn it.
I did 'learn' it, and just don't much like it. I can watch it and get into the contest before me - but would usually rather be doing something else.

Ice hockey is great - argy bargey galore, with people on ice ffs, who crash into each other but the crashee STILL lacks an understanding for the crasher! Fast, furious, and fueled, the kitted-up contestants seemingly only occasionally care about the puck, which is cold and very hard and flies anywhere - very fast. Few have finesse, and compared to The Great One (Gretzky, naturalement) - nobody has. Dashed exciting stuff, but in America the participants are usually not Americans! Much like our Premier league, they usually come from elsewhere in the World.
It bears a relation to our football, because there's a goal, a keeper, passes and rules that make it that way. It is not really 'American' though, they just have a league, and accepted and embraced it, from Canadians and Eastern Europeans. Compared to baseball and football, it has a small fanbase.

Depends...

any ticket for the NY Rangers is expensiuve but in general, the closer to the glass you are, the more expensive the ticket AND as NHL is 3 periods and the home team attacks one end twice then seats at that end are more expensive

For half decent rangers tickets expect to pay $$$. Watching the phoenix Coyotes (who are rubbish) then tickets are a fair bit cheaper. NHL jerseys though are mega expensive - if you want an authentic version (with fight strap included) then your looking at $250 - $300
