America - Land of the Free or The Great Satan?

seeing as it seems to be the theme of the day, is that great expanse a beacon of hope to the poor huddled masses and a land of opportunity where even a highly educated and privileged black man can aspire to be leader of the free world, or is it the Great Satan and oppressor of its native peoples and those in the middle east, where poorly made rush job copies of its flag deserve to be burnt in some dusty street by an arab jumping up and down and patting his head?

Thoughts? I have had a nice time there and the food is cheap for starters.

We went there this year for three weeks and I have to say I was dreading a few things that may happen but actually found it a very pleasant experience.

Easily our best family holiday for quite a while.

Interested to know why The Spanish is so America obsessed and seemingly not in a positive way - on the whole.
Not overly bothered but just curious.

I have spent 6 hours in LA airport and a hugely obese black lady in an ill-fitting uniform made me take my 10 hole DM's off and didn't say please !

I think there could be a US Foreign Policy metaphor in there somewhere.

She had a good reason, not so long ago somebody tried to smuggle a bomb onto a plane which was hiden in his shoes. Your boots would have triggered their alarms, just the same as they would have here.

There are pros and cons to the US, just the same as there are here.

Why is it always Brit ex pats who start getting defensive about their adopted homeland when everyone who lives in England joins in the tongue in cheek piss taking about their fellow countrymen being a bit idiotic and trying to talk like Rachel and Ross? Interesting. Someone else said Americans could not give a toss what we thought of them. Do they give a toss what immigrants think we think of them?

To answer your question I started one thread about English people. I have been to over 35 States in the US and found them mostly breathtaking, inspiring and fascinating (except the dull 4x4 and pool suburban sprawls in the sun for ex-pats and retiree places like ahem parts of Florida). But that wasnt the point. I am tired of spelling this out to hypersensitive people who turned their back on their own country and now feel the need to defend someone elses on their behalf, whilst almost laughably missing the point in their desperation to tell everyone they live in America.

It could easily have been the French or the Italians, but you dont get English people mindlessly repeating phrases they have learned from French or Italian TV in City coffee shops. Otherwise they would be a legitimate target too.

At the risk of appearing hypesensitive I would like to apologise both for anything positive I might have said about America and more particularly for "turning my back on my homeland". I see now that it was selfish and wrong of me. Off now to resign , put my house up for sale and return home at the first opportunity.

not having a pop mate but you are doing it again. I think America is f***ing excellent but I think English people who try to talk like Americans are wallies. It really isn't tricky. Don't leave, its rubbish here. You done the right thing.

America with Republican in The White House = The Great Satan
America with Democrat in The White house = Land Of The Free
