Remember when the French cartoonists were murdered and many just shrugged and said, "Well, if you're going to draw cartoons about that then what do you expect...?"

Yup, the absurd contradiction of many apologists; we must stand by and respect religious values whilst condemning Western values (which incorporate something called "Freedom of Religion"). It's very concerning how the most radical critics are not non-Western or of a BAME community, but of a white, middle class background.

He's making a general point on how people can accept the unacceptable.

Remember when the French cartoonists were murdered and many just shrugged and said, "Well, if you're going to draw cartoons about that then what do you expect...?"

Who were these many who just shrugged and said that about the Hebdo murders?

I get his point but it's overshadowed by hyperbole, imo. A journalist, past pension age, being let go is not remotely comparable to someone being sent to the gulag. It's shouting communism for clicks.

Ps. The collective response to the Je Suis Charlie attacks wasn't a shrug. Millions demonstrated across France, joined by numerous world leaders. On the darker side, there was a spate of anti-muslim attacks.

One of our own, as he started off on Southern Television, reading the Lunchtime news and on Day by Day.

Classic example of a good old fashioned storm in a tea cup being promoted in these days of political correctness into something more akin to the Cuban Missile Crisis.

And the sting in the tail being that despite saying Mr Stewart shouldn't be leaving ITN over this, the person who originally complained has no doubt got a few quid for his story from the media.

I'm not sure how many people would resign over a 'good old fashioned storm in a tea cup'. However, I take the point that it won't be long before this is forgotten about and people will move onto the next 'outrage' (see Baker, D, for a recent example)

There is probably a lot more to the story (and his decision) than what has been seen by the public. Twitter is a pretty toxic place most of the time, largely due to the fact that those people venting on it aren't in possession of the full set of facts. And if they every DO have all the facts, the chances of an apology or an admission of their error is about as high as the Albion keeping clean sheets for the rest of the season...

Unfortunately in this day and age people seem to have to resign over nothing more than a storm in a teacup.

I do wonder how Gulls Eye's depiction of Robert Codner in the form of a Chimpanzee doing a w***er sign in 1990 (after he'd done the very same gesture to West Stand fans after being subbed) would be greeted 30 years on?

There is more to the story; ITV have said it’s not just this single Tweet.

Anyway, as others have said, chap was not forced out for one bit of poetry.

There are serious miscarriages of justice, canty old bollocks, etc., to get broflakey over. This isn't one

AS he has been making a bit of a knob of himself for a while on Twitter, and as a high-profile newsreader I imagine ITV were getting very tired of him being the news, as opposed to him presenting the news. This alone was probably enough for them to want to get shot of him. And when they had their moment they took it. He’s a twit and really should have known better.

Nothing but sympathy for Alistair Stewart, he wasn't being racist he was quoting Shakespeare ffs. But in England we are so utterly terrified of 'racism' that we always bow down to the 'outraged' mob. A hugely respected and talented broadcaster has his career and reputation in tatters for quoting Shakespeare. ITN should've stood by him and said it's not racism but you can guarantee if they had there would be the inevitable 'online petitions' and 'advertisers pulling out.' This country has taken leave of it's senses.

The hypocricy is broadcasting is staggering, Trevor Sinclair called a Policeman a 'white c**t when arrested for drink driving and yet he is still on Talksport, if that was a white ex footballer calling a black policeman a 'black c**t' would he still be in the media? I think we know the answer to that one.

Why does quoting Shakespeare mean you can't be racist! Try reading the Merchant of Venice.

And anyway, it wasn't just about that Tweet.

Can you give some examples where people in this day and age have resigned over a storm in a teacup ?

Alistair's error was quoting Shakespeare, far too high brow for many to understand.
Strange that Alistair has to go, but Piers Morgan is able to tweet with immunity.

This really gets my back up. The fake Iraq abuse photos and phone tapping scandal and Piers Morgan still has a cushy job on TV. He is a scumbag.
