Classic case of a player getting better with game time, especially when played in his preferred position. Don’t write off Ali J, he is clearly made of stern stuff and has unshakeable belief in himself. Absolute credit to the club, really hoping he kicks on and gets to play the rest of this season

Anyone who can’t see what he brought to the team yesterday is in denial imo.

Do you think he had a really good game yesterday? For me he had a lot of time and space on a few occasions and did very little with it.

I think he was one of our better players, very nearly scored, had a shot blocked and laid off some good passes and made some crosses. So yes I do think he had a good game

I do get the impression that he could have scored a hatrick and some would still find fault because he’s shit and not even a footballer.

How many of those appearances are for five minutes when we're already losing? Misleading stats

Very misleading.
Sadly I think the CH way of playing comes into it as well. Biss didn’t get a proper run until GP arrived.

And yet Ali J has just one assist in 48 Premier League appearances

Nice guy, tries hard, lots of excuses are therefore made for him but ultimately he doesn’t do enough in the chances he’s given and just isn’t quite good enough.

I tend to agree, I'd say that after nigh on fifty games for the club, if he was going to succeed he would have done it by now. Interesting too that Graham Potter hasn't really showed much more faith in him than Chris Hughton did. A nice guy, as someone said, he may well be, but that doesn't win you games of football.

That said, unless he is prepared to take a substantial salary decrease, or the club can arrange some sort of loan deal, he will still be with us for next season.

Classic case of a player being a bit bobbins for 3 seasons, then having a few nice moments in a game and people fooling themselves into forgetting the previous 3 seasons of bobbins.

:bigwave:

Excellent, good to see you back with your perpetual negativity

You may have missed it but he’s done OK for a few games now. Sorry, of course you missed it even if you were watching

Then consider me in denial, considering the amount of money we paid for him, he has been little more than an expensive flop.

Another one who thinks he was shit even when he has a good game. OK, I give up,I have been worn down arguing with people who refuse to see what’s in front of them because he hasn’t actually had a run until recently, so even if he plays well we’ll slag him off because he hasn’t done it in the previous two years.

So just "doing ok" is considered sufficient of worthy praise now is it?

Yep, as a Brighton fan I try and support our players when they do well, regardless of what has gone before, but carry on

I thought Solly March was lightweight and shit for most of our time in the PL but over the last couple of seasons I have changed my mind. Possibly player of the season before he got injured. Seems to be an NSC rule for many that you make a decision and stick by it, even if you end up looking like a mug.

Unbelievable imo that posters like you can’t see that he has done OK in his last few appearances because you have never rated him.

Whoaaa, just when did l say that l think he was shit? I simply think that for the extortionate amount of money that we paid for him, he should be doing a lot better than "just ok".

Is that really too much to ask?

No, but at least give him just a smidgen of credit when he does well, unless of course you thought he was crap yesterday

Anyway I have said enough, I’ll leave it there

and gets a good chance to prove himself in his best position.
I am certain he will come good.

Whilst not certain he will come good, otherwise agree. He's showing definite signs of it, and not only yesterday, that he's worth keeping. I just wish that Potter wouldn't persistently sub him (unless he has a good reason we don't know about). It can't be great for his morale, and he was doing far more yesterday than the ineffectual Trossard. Let's see what he can do in the last two matches.

What he's done (or not done) in the past three seasons is relevant. Even if he goes on to have two decent seasons now, we'll have paid him five years of good wages (not to mention a (then) record breaking transfer fee) for two years of doing the job out of five - and that's an expensive and not very successful piece of business.
If he can start terrorising defenders, scoring lots of goals and assists, I'll be delighted. Seriously, can he though? I'm still on the side of moving him on if we can, and getting him off the wage bill - that's obviously just my opinion. If we are going to play with wingers (as well as wing backs; three at the back seems to work well for us) I wonder how well Longman might perform as a winger with a few goals in him, and could he be a better bet?

Agreed. A record signing shouldn't be a squad player.

I mostly agree with you, what he was signed for or we agreed to pay isn’t his fault - I’ve not been a fan of his but never doubted he’s given his all to try to contribute to the football club so has kept up his side of the contract. If that isn’t good enough well, those are the judgement calls you make.

Yesterday he had a good game, more effective than Trossard, and caused problems. Looked a bit like the player we hoped we were getting. Even then though, I couldn’t help feeling he should really have scored or created key chances for someone to score. He did okay, but the quality of the positions and space he got into, really should have done better - but of course that is a recurring theme for many of our forward players
