Alexis Smertin is being touted around in the papers again today. He would solve our midfield problem but would he want big wages or has he earnt enough that he would just like to play first team football again at 33 years old.

Out of our league. Would at least be good enough for a top end Championship club.

According to NOW Chelsea have said they want to get him off the wage bill but they have had no enquiries. Suprised a championship side hasnt tried so perhaps a cheeky offer might work. Wouldnt think his wage would be too high as he must have earned a lot during his career.

Can't see him leaving Chelsea, to come here for his last year to be honest. Not for seriously reduced wages either. I imagine their reserves are a better standard than us!

Dont really think thats the mindset of the modern day footballer though unfortunately. Would at least expect someone like Charlton to put in a cheeky bid. Would imagine he would prefer to go back home than come to us, or even move somewhere else abroad.

HE PLAYS FOR FULHAM

Sorry I typed the wrong club it is Fulham who want to release him. I get confused because when I was a young lad it was always one of them got relegated from Div 1 and the other won Div 2 and then they swapped again shortly after.

That doesnt change the fact that he could do a decent job for us.

That is where he made his name but also spent along time on loan to Portsmouth I believe. So perhaps he is not that much above our level that he would, if asked, consider us.

According to News of World Fulham have had no enquiries at all

Not wanting to be dull, but it would be a dull signing. Is BG a steward?

No I am most definitely not and was just reading the gossip/transfer speculation thinking who could we bring in to improve our team as everybody seems to think the weakness is an inflential midfielder, perhaps he could do for us now what Denis Mortimer did some years ago.

I'm sure he could, but sadly I think the days of people like Smertin/Mortimer dropping down 2 divisions in this way is long gone (waits for postings of numerous recent e.g.s to prove me wrong!!)

Must be mixed up with Alexis Bertin

Sounds like by far the most likely option to me.

I can understand Fulham wanting rid of him, but I can't see we'd be even slightly close to the front of the queue.

Don't ge me wrong, I think he'd certainly "do a job" for us, but I reckon there's more chance of Leon Knight managing to last more than a season at a club without pissing people off than there is of Smertin coming here.
