Of Filipino/Irish-American roots, she was born and raised on the islands of Java and Bali Indonesia. Her songs are an expression of inspiration and perceptions that reflect her journeys and beliefs in the world revolving around human rights, identity and love.

A tad more mainstream but a stunning return from Natalie Merchant after a difficult time with a degenerative spinal disease and subsequently her voice.

Love the phrase "Merchant’s gift is that her songs are not always comfortable listening, but they are comforting."

Have only given it one listen, but London Brew appeals immensely. It is a re-working of the Miles Davis classic, showcasing the delicious talent that is the current London jazz scene. It captures the feel, intensity and exuberance of Bitches Brew, but in an entirely new way.

(Avant garde electronica )
12. Fatima Al Qadari - Fidelik
(Fusing experimental electronica with traditional Arabic laments that is not a million miles away from Vangelis' soundtrack to Bladerunner )
13. Dania - Foreign Body
(Mixing field recordings, samples of Iraqi music, vocalisation and cinematic scores to muse on growing up as a cultural outsider )
14. Mandy, Indiana - Pinking Shears
(Manchester band with French lead singer vocalising over a clanging that sounds like a tin can being thrown against corrugated iron.)
15. Sightless Pit featuring Midwife - Resin on a Knife
(Two members of noise metal band The Body dispense with the guitars but not the sinister husky vocals, and replace with dubby cinematic electronica and soft female vocals as a counterpoint)
