Albion's worst ever player sale?

I seem to recall a goalkeeper who we sold with a clause in the contract that if he went on to play International Football for England there was a bonus for us.
He did play international football, for Ireland.

This is difficult really. As lack of finances has 'forced the clubs hand', like Dean Saunders.

I would go with Ian Muir. Neil McNab also seemed to get better with age.

You could argue a case for Damian Webber who was with the club as an apprentice, released and then went on to make 100+ appearances for QPR and Millwall I believe.

I heard the story that a meeting was called by Bamber for all the playing staff, after a run of poor results, it started by Bamber saying 'lets be honest say what you feel, nothing will be held against you' and Mcnab said 'I think your the problem Mr Chairman'.

Mcnab never played again.

...before Brighton and Hove Albion acquired his services for the fee of £220,000 in February 1980. During 1982 he played in loan spells at Leeds United and Portsmouth.

Then in 1983 he signed for £35,000 for Manchester City with whom he stayed until 1990. He was arguably City's player of the eighties, being voted Player of the Year in both the 1986-87 and 1988-89 seasons. A skilful and very combative defensive midfielder, Neil inspired a young team to promotion from the Second Division in 1989. He played 221 league matches for City and scored 16 goals.

Always a quality player for us, but the crowd, brought up on a previous diet of kick and rush third division football, never like him and used to give him dog's abuse.

Thats correct.

I know a guy who was a young pro at the time, and he would rave about Mcnab as the stand out player in a squad full of Internationals.

But during games the crowd wouldn't tolerate his reluctance to bash the ball forward, rather using his touch and skill to keep possession, the crowd never really took to him.

He wanted to go. Ron Atkinson tried to sign him for United for £400k plus Ashley Grimes and Kevin Moran, but the Albion preferred the cash deal from the Bindippers at the time.

I spoke to mark at the time and he told me he wanted to stay, I knew vanessa he's wife to be [she was a work colleague at the time].
The only reason he went is because we needed the money.

Terry Connor was 50 goals in around 150 games. Not our worst sale (I think he went because we got relegated) but certainly an under-rated player. I read that he is now coaching at Wolves and had a hand in that brillinat goal Wolves scored first game of the season (the flick up and volley).

Assistant manager:thumbsup:

The crowds haven't changed some of them still give the players dogs abuse for no apprarent reason other than they have paid for their seat and they think that gives them the right to shout abuse. I've always thought that was a good motivating tactic:glare:

But back to the topic. It would have been Ian Wright we had him but threw him back in the pond for some low life team to pick him up

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned Brian Horton. He went on to give Luton a couple of very good seasons - and promotion to the 1st Div.

Didn't we also have the JOCKO version of Trevor Brooking that we sold to City for £40k and he went on to be their top scorer the following season?
