Albion's First Sunday Game?

The dull part of the south coast
Need help with this one. Back in 1973/74 the Albion played a fixture on a Sunday, I believe during the energy crisis 3-day week. There were no evening games as floodlights used too much power.

Now I remember attending this game but not who against, or the score. I also remember a lot of protest from the Lord's Day Observance Society. Again hazy memory makes me think that there was no official entrance charge but that you had to buy a programme (same cost of admission) to get round Sunday trading laws.

If you can correct me on the above, and, fill in the blanks I would be grateful. Many cheers.

I went to this one and if you had to put my feet in the flames I would say it was Southport 0-0.

Can't remember the entrance fee thingy but you are right about the floodlights.

Just looked it up - Sunday 20th Jan 1974 Rochdale 2-1 scorers Towner & Beamish.

Beat Rochdale 2-1 (Towner & Beamish)
Att: 18,885 (largest of the season)

The usual admission price was paid as a subscription to the 'Dolphins Club', a membership card was issued. STHs were deemed to be honorary members.

Cloughie was manager at the time.

That season we lost the first 6 home games (inc a league cup match), but were unbeaten for the first 5 away games.

The crowd was way above our average, at least twice as much, and bigger crowds were recorded across the country for these Sunday games. We also had around 17,000 for our next Sunday home fixture v Hereford, and these were matches involving low to mid table div 3.

We also played Cambridge away and nearly 9,000 there including many Albion and loads of agro.

Think I still have my Dolphin Club membership somewhere.

Wasn't that the same reason why we played an FA Cup replay against Walton and Hersham and everyone had to bunk off school as it was on a midweek afternoon? And we lost.

Yeah I went to the 0-0 at their place and wasn't allowed out of school to see the replay at the Goldstone. Bit of luck really as we lost 0-4.!

I bunked school, despite a servere warning.

Thankfully, the teacher must have thought I had suffered enough so nothing more was said.

I went with my mum and uncle to Cambridge away during the the 3day week on a Sunday I think we had a player called Hilton I think he cleared the ball which smashed into a window in the main stand. Long time ago my memory struggling ?

Pat Hilton. But he didn't play at Cambridge. His last game for the club was back in December 73

I have a vague memory of my address not being believed when I tried to join the Club. If this was 1974, it would have been Stanford Road, Brighton.

My mate wasn't so lucky. Not only did he suffer an embarrassing defeat but he got six of the best from the head on his return.

I'm sure there was a season at withdean, where we played a game on every day of the week ( not consecutively obviously )
