More as a talking point I have done a verdict on how things stand after transfer deadline. I have picked what would be my starting 11 with back ups for each position in italics.

KEEPER

Kuipers - does a job but really we need a proper first choice.
Sullivan - Is he good enough back or not? Would be nice to find out.

Verdict
New keeper needed

DEFENDERS

Whing - Good RB
El-Abd - Decent back up for whole defence, nothing more

Elphick - Good CB
Hinshelwood - Good CB, just always injured

Lynch - Good CB
Butters - Good back up but getting on a bit

Richards - Good LB, just hope we sign him permanently
Mayo - Not good enough
Rents - Needs to toughen up if want to be a LB or should convert to LW

Verdict
Looks good, however we may need to reinforce slightly in the summer

MIDFIELD

Reid - Needs to get back to fitness but quality
Martot - Doesn't do enough. Can play centre though if necessary
Robinson - Toughened up a little and looks better but need to be more effective

Thomson - Not seen enough to say but hoping will be a steady influence
Fogden - Can play a number of positions, mainly RB and CB. Looks like a prospect.

Fraser - I would give him a run as I think his quality will show in time
McFaul - Not seen anything of him
Chamberlain - Looks good when I've seen him so not sure whats going on

Cox - Still young but form is patchy
Loft - Not sure. Is he better in the centre. Is he any good at all?

Verdict
Reid, Thomson and Fraser need time one way or another. Have we got it though. Back ups in the centre look light and we need a back up on the left although Robinson or Rents could be the answer.

STRIKERS

Forster - Good player
Dixon - Who knows?

Murray - Bright start but will have to wait and see
Hart - Probably going and to be honest not up to it anymore either up front or RB
Gatting - Not happening

Verdict
Needs time with 2 new players but even if they come off we still need another back up.

OVERALL - New keeper needed, defence is fine, midfield needs shoring up (especially centre and left) and up front...well who knows yet.

we need another 2 centre backs

Elphick and Lynch should be first choice
Butters must be in his last season
Mayo is past it
El Abd should not be allowed near rthe starting line up
Hinshlewood is the best defender but we cant rely on him being fit for more than 3 months

we need a left midfielder and central midfielder is obvious to everyone

I think we need one more striker too

I think Jake is by far the best right winger we have, don't understand why he isn't prefered to Martot. Cox in the middle with a loaned left winger and is not a bad team. Reid has played well since his return, how longis he out for?

I suspect Butters is probably in his last season, the problem is we are then left with a very young group of centrehalves. Elphick, Lynch, Pearson looks good, El-Abd is ok back up. What we could do with though is someone between the age of 27 and 31, experienced but not too old, to help them though. Although saying that we have not seen Lynch and Elphick together really. Potentially an amazing pairing.

I'd like to see Mayo played in his proper position, ie centre midfield. Although he's played a lot of his time as left back he is really a midfielder to me. Also, could do worse than play Rents at left midfield as he does at least know how to put a decent cross in. Otherwise Les, you're pretty close to the mark

Don't see him as third, just back up.

I am going on the fact that Wilkins seems to play him more in midfield than up front. The point was to discuss the issues, not to pick the most pedantic holes you can in what I've posted.
